House has two ceiling speakers in 5 rooms. (total of 10 speakers). I am purchasing an amplifier however I do not know if I need a speaker selector. Thank you!
A speaker selector would be nice so you could choose which rooms you wanted the sound in, if not all rooms. I know that my amplifier has built in speaker selection, but I don't think it has 5 different zones, maybe just two. I guess the answer is yes, you need one, unless you want all of the speakers on all of the time.
out breaking a sweat, I#39;m using a speaker selector so I dont risk overloading the amp ... pioneer rx-550 vantage audio sony amp stereo ...
If so, how? Just two speaks to R+ & R- , and two to L+ and L-?
Is there anything special about the speakers I want to connect?
Heres my stereo:

I was going to use this speaker selector:

The speaker switch you selected is the exact thing you need. Just connect the L and R speaker outputs from the Philips unit to the speaker switch. Then connect the Philips speakers to one set of outputs on the switch and the new speakers to another output set on the speaker switch. So it looks like this
...................................................... _____ Philips speakers (R, L)
Philips unit -->Spkr switch-- {
......................................................... _____ AudioSource speakers(R, L)
The speaker switch will protect the phillips radio from damage because it's impedance balanced, and it has room for 2 more pairs of speakers, if you so desire.

I am interested in a Denon stereo receiver (Link below). It will be going into a 6 port speaker selector (with 6 pairs of speakers for the house). Will this receiver be powerful enough to power the speakers? Or do I need something with more watts per channel? I don't want to spend over $500. Any suggestions? THANKS!

That would be really pushing it unless you're just talking about low volume background music throughout the house.
I use a rack of separate receivers to power each zone in my house (2 pairs of speakers per receiver) which gives much greater flexibility.
If you shop around, you can find 3 inexpensive receivers for $500.
I know Yamaha and Denon both have several A/V receivers in the $150 price range.
You won't need to use the speaker selector if you go this way, just use the A/B speaker switches to turn zones on and off.
Another way to go is a multi-channel amp. They can be really pricey, but something like this might work:
Although you might need a 6 zone version depending on your setup.

Just a suggestion.
Oh, and obviously you'll need "Y" adapters to spit the signal coming out of your CD player to the separate receivers. I actually use a little 1 input 6 output buffering amplfier made by Niles to feed a single source line level signal to the multiple amps.

Im hooking up an in-ceiling speaker system for my new house. I ordered 6 speakers, 5 in wall volume adjustment knobs, and a Pyle PSS6 6-Pair High Power Stereo Speaker Selector. I thought I ordered everything I need, because the website said it was an "entire house kit" that had everything I need. But the more I look around, don't i need a stereo amplifier to power the speakers??? I dont think the speaker selector is an amp also. My question is, can I use an old CD player to hook into the speaker selector and use the wattage from my cd player? Or can I use my home theater surround sound dvd player, which is rated 1000 watts to power the speakers? Or do I need to just buy a stereo amplifier??? Thanks for your time. PS Im looking for something cheap, around 100 bucks if possible. Thanks.
You need a amplifier to run those speakers. It is possible to hook the speakers up to a basic stereo amp, like the Pyle PCA1 (link below), or a more sophisicated stereo receiver/amplifier, like a Yamaha RX-397 (link below). Most people, though, hook up speakers to a home theater receiver for use with surround sound from movies, music from CDs, or your iPod. An example is the Yamaha HTR-6230 (link provided below as well)
If you do pick the home theater route, avoid a cheap home theater system that comes with it's own speakers. You don't need the speakers, and hooking one up to your in-ceiling speakers maybe very difficult.
I have an older stereo system with an amp that is not 5.1 so I am unable to use this for watching DVD's and get the surround sound but the sound it produces in stereo mode is awesome. I also have 5.1 amp that I use for watching DVD's, I want to have both amps hooked up to my 4 speakers and be able to switch between the amps depending if I want to watch a DVD or just listen to CD's. Is there a box out there that will allow you to switch between amp inputs? There are a lot of speaker selectors out there that allow you to switch between speaker sets but I want to be able to select my power source and use the same speakers. Will I have to build something to do this or is there something out there that I can buy to do this?
As long as you never have both amps turned on at the same time, you can just hook both amps to the speakers like you normally would.
Two red wires going into each speaker & two black wires going into each speaker.
I drew two pictures in Windows Paint & in case the way I worded what I said doesn't make any sense to anybody.

Thinkenstein the reason would be the possible risk of damage that might occur if the power was to enter the amplifier that is turned off. If this is something that might be of concern, you can eliminate the risk by hooking each wire leaving the amplifiers into a simple home made on/off speaker switch before sending the wires to the speakers.

Good find Thinkenstein. Two of those Niles DPS-1 A-B selectors would work well for this application.
