I have 2 Home speakers with the specs on the back stating:
400 Watts
8 Ohms
91 DB (1W/1M)
I need to buy an an amplifier/receiver, but I want to make sure I get the right one. I heard on here that any amp/receiver should be ok for the two speakers. However I just went into a stereo store, and the guy said you dont want to run anything lower wattage on these speakers (ie 100 watts per channel) as this will cause distortion and ruin the speakers. What he suggested cost 2500.00 which is 2 receivers, and thats way out of my budget! Not sure if he was just tryin to sell me more than I need. The Denmark speakers were worth 3500.00 for the two of them 5 years ago, and I wouldn't want to ruin them.
I dont want to upgrade to surround sound, the speakers I have are good enough. Can anyone tell me where I can find a receiver for 200 true watts per channel or higher. I only need two channels. And if running these speakers on anything under 400 watts per channel will cause distortion and ruin them.
thanks
400 watts is the peak power they'll handle. An amp a little over 200 watts per channel RMS will produce peaks close to 400 watts. So, an amp a little over 200 watts RMS would be the maximum you'd ever need.
Pushing any amp into clipping distortion, turning up the volume to the point where the music starts to sound "fuzzy" will trash ANY speaker. But, all you have to do is know better and not do that.
These speakers are very efficient at 91dB and easy for any receiver to drive at 8 Ohms. This means they'll play just as loudly as any other speaker on a given amount of power. There is no reason to power them to their full power handling capacity unless you want to play them as loudly as their capable of playing (very, very loud).
It's true that a speaker with a higher power rating than the amp driving it can still be damaged by clipping distortion. It is not true that it's more likely to happen than with any other speaker, particularly if the speakers have a high efficiency rating and these do. Just don't push the amp into distortion and you're 100% safe. If you're trying to play music loud and it starts sounding a little "fuzzy"... turn down the volume a bit. Simple as that. A 200 watt amp can also be pushed into clipping and would damage the speakers even more quickly. You ALWAYS have to be careful no matter what.
I think you'd be fine with a good quality 100 watt stereo receiver, so long as you know it's limitations and don't try to push them... There are very decent stereo receivers out there from the better brands like Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Harman Kardon, Yamaha... This is probably the way I'd go on a budget, unless I had a couple grand for a preamp and separate 200 watt amp from Rotel or Adcom, etc...
Harman audio sells factory refurbs on eBay with full factory warranties at very nice prices. I recently bought a Harman Kardon AVR-247 home theater receiver from them and I'm very happy with it. I could never have afforded anything so nice at full price. I was seeing quite a few stereo receivers among their items the last couple weeks, but I don't see any right now... just 7.1 home theater receivers. It's possible they'll list some more stereo receivers, so I'll give you a link anyway. Keep in mind their power ratings are very conservative. Most people say 80 HK watts seems to equal what the other brands sell as 120 watts or so. Their sound quality is about as good as you will find in a receiver.

I have been meaning to make a video showing the quot;finalquot; product, but i wanted to replace my wiring first and clean everything up in the ...
Well i have a 1995 subaru legacy ls, and the right front speaker is blown out. I want to replace the factory speakers, as well as the factory stereo. Im just not really sure on what to do, or what to ask for if i went to adavanced auto parts or some store like that. Any recomandations as to what i should buy ? I would like to keep it to about 200 dollars.. and i tend to shy away from the internet sites.. so thanks for all your help.
If you would like to get all new speakers and a new head unit i would suggest going to a best buy or local area electronics store. Advanced auto parts stuff is cheap i will admit but you get what you pay for. If you go to Best Buy i would suggest a Pioneer 1900 and probably some infinity speakers...you will probably be looking at around 300 though so if you are insisting on keeping it around 200 stay with the pioneer deck and get some cheaper speakers like dual or insignia (best buy exclusive brand but made by power acoustic so they are decent.) The reason I say go with pioneer is because it is cheap and its has great quality and is very user friendly. Infinity speakers are really clear and definately are worth the money. I was an Installer at Best Buy not only two months ago. If you have any questions feel free to aim me at skateallday824 or email me at hustlaskater@gmail.com.

I have an xbox and would like to get surround sound with my existing stereo speakers.
What I was going to try was to get and fm transmiter, then get the audio converter to headphone jack to plug into the fm transmitter then that would give the audio to my stereo.
or i was going to try to get like a receiving cable so that i could plug in my xbox cables then have that run to the back of my stereo.
i would like to use the second plan because it isnt to far the cables would be hidden but does it matter wired or wireless the sound quality. also could someone show me decent-good cables to do the wired solution and prices... i would prefer if they were from a local store(best buy, walmart, radio shack)
thanks for any help i get
you can buy a cable for the xbox that will give you 5.1 souind like your dvd player go to bestbuy i got one and is great
If I wanted to put larger ones in, would I be able to find a professional installer that is willing to modify the car to fit a larger speaker? For example, if the Boxster can only fit a 4 inch speaker, would I be able to get the guys at the car stereo store to increase the space to fit some 6.5" speakers in there?
you need to go and find a custom car shop that deals in audio.......wait hold it......yeah yeah yeah never mind once you find a custom car shop ask tell them what you want to do and then get their feedback. It's it' sounds good and they say they can handle a job like that, which will give you the results you want with out compromising the class of the porshe I say go for it. Ask for references too.
