How do I test whether my bookshelf home stereo speakers are damaged or blown?

It's unlikely that you shredded the cones. Take a 1.5 volt battery (any size) and wire to connect to the speakers. As you tap the wire to the battery, you'll hear the speaker click if the voice coil isn't blown. The usual problem if one speaker stops working is a loose connection. This is common in small diameter cables, and I have that problem right now with one of my computer speakers. The solution is to get a plug of the right size at Radio Shack and replace the offending plug, which you can find by bending the wire or jamming it into the plug. Or get a new wire with matching size plugs. If the only connection is a plug rather than screw terminals, you'll have to take the case apart to connect to the speaker terminals. But if that's the case, I'd bet there's a loose connection at a plug.

Why do my stereo speakers occasionally not work until I crank up the volume on my receiver/tuner?

It seems like the speakers "jolt" to life only when the volume level crosses a certain threshold. (About 40 to 50% of max volume.) Once the speakers come to life, the volume can be lowered again, and they continue work until I turn off the amp. I never noticed this before moving into my new place. I've tested different speakers and even a different tuner/amp. Could it be the speaker cable? The runs aren't that long - no more than 10 to 25 feet.

That's beacause, if you have a tune of particularly demanding bass then the subwoofer in each speaker can't produce any noise untill cranked above the level you're talking about.
The speakers will be producing noise, just maybe under the the humans hearing range (20hz-2Mhz), however, when cranked above, it enters the hearing range and allows you to do this.
The only solution I can think of is to turn off all bass EQ's (equilisers) and turn on any treble EQ's.
This may not work, if not, you'll just have to buy another set of speakers, or live with your problem.

Surround sound system only performs in stereo mode?

I cannot get my Yamaha receiver to function in surround mode, only stereo mode. I've performed a speaker test and all speakers test separately and fine. It's a Yamaha HTR-5660 6.1 surround system. It's connected to a DVD player, a FIOS cable receiver and a widescreen TV. Thanks.

No audio on surround speakers when testing "in phase"?

When testing my surround stereo speakers using the THX Optimizer, the rear speakers put out no audio at all when testing "out of phase". Is that normal?

I would think that would be normal. Whenever I test speakers manually, for phase, I sure don't want there to be more than 2 sources. It's hard enough testing 2 speakers for phase, let alone 4.

If that optimizer has some special software that can do it -- it's news to me, and I would be very impressed!.

'95 Toyota 4runner stereo install..Back speakers only work with tuner?

but when i play a cd only the front speakers work...I have everything connected correctly to the wiring harness purchased...however, I do have 2 extra wires from my alpine aftermarket stereo, Pink/black power antenna and Blue/black remote something(lead). I keep reading the it may have something to do with the Blue/Black remote wire, but I've connected everything there is to connect. Do I have the incorrect harness...it says for 95 toyota(along with every toyota from 77 on) and I do have power antenna which is broken anyway so I have no way to test. Thanks
I would really like to avoid the removal of my in dash wiring harness. ..

Those wiring harnesses are very unreliable in my experience. It's probably not your fault, the harness might not fit the car. They say the harnesses are for a wide range of cars, but I have yet to find one to work after installing several stereos. My advice would be to used the harness that comes with the radio, and attach the wires directly to the wires in your dash. There should be a sticker on your old radio that will tell you which wires are which

Don’t go running off to a car stereo sale without knowing what it is your system needs.

You’ve got your 18’ sized chrome mags.

Second instance: You already have a car stereo system installed, but you would like to upgrade it.

Although some people like to put home stereos in their cars and vans (out of dire need for some sounds), sometimes it just doesn’t work.

If you’re a beginner, it’s best you do a car stereo installation if it’s just a simple system.

In many other cars, a kit is needed if the factory hole is too big, or not deep enough.
