It seems like the speakers "jolt" to life only when the volume level crosses a certain threshold. (About 40 to 50% of max volume.) Once the speakers come to life, the volume can be lowered again, and they continue work until I turn off the amp. I never noticed this before moving into my new place. I've tested different speakers and even a different tuner/amp. Could it be the speaker cable? The runs aren't that long - no more than 10 to 25 feet.
That's beacause, if you have a tune of particularly demanding bass then the subwoofer in each speaker can't produce any noise untill cranked above the level you're talking about.
The speakers will be producing noise, just maybe under the the humans hearing range (20hz-2Mhz), however, when cranked above, it enters the hearing range and allows you to do this.
The only solution I can think of is to turn off all bass EQ's (equilisers) and turn on any treble EQ's.
This may not work, if not, you'll just have to buy another set of speakers, or live with your problem.

There is someone in our house who will not listen to reason and has no consideration for others. (We're way beyond that point...). I have the time and I have the access and she doesn't have the brains to figure out what has happened.
Please save the "mature chat/intervention" advice.

Not unless you open it up and stick something to prevent the volume knob from turning farther.

There are 2 ways to do this.
1) Take the original volume control from the radio and extend it to the handlebars by adding a cable of some sort. A "ribbon cable" with the appropriate number of conductors (usually 5 or 6) is a good candidate.
2) Wire a stereo high-wattage volume control directly to the speakers and mount it on the handlebars. Such a volume control is called a "T-Pad," and is available at local electronics stores such as Radio Shack. A book with instructions on how to do it should be available there as well. Be sure to get a stereo T-Pad, and make sure it matches the wattage of the radio output, as well as the impedance of the speakers. Happy cycling!

200Watt RMS / 600Watt Total Music Power Capability.
Heavy duty transformer based impedance matching system protects your valuable amplifier and speakers from damage because of excessively low impedance when all 4 speaker pairs are switched on and playing simultaneously.
Can be connected to 2 separate amplifiers via A/B switch.
Input/output through push terminals which accept up to 14awg speaker wire.
4 pairs of speakers can be controlled independently. Any 1 pair or up to all 4 pairs can be controlled at the same time or in combination with a volume control.
I have an alpine cda 9813 car stereo. It is a 60 x 4. When I turn the volume up to about 20 on the stereo all of the 6 x 8 speakers and tweeters shut off. The subs still work though. I have tried hooking up a few different speakers to see if they will work but they all shut off.
Could there be a problem with the cd player output or could it be that the 6 x 8's just don't have enough watts for what the stereo is pushing??? Any ideas....thanks!
You are overloading your head unit. It is not designed to run at the volume you are asking of it.
If you want more volume fit extra amps.
everything is the original equiptment.
There is a compression protection circuit built into your amp that is engaging and causing the "pumping" sound you're hearing. It means you're overdriving your amp.
You want loud? Bigger, better amp, make sure your speakers match the ratings of the amp. Use big cables to drive your speakers.
