What would cause my home stereo subwoofer to emit a horribly loud feedback sound withough any source signal?

I just bought a Wharfedale 10" 250W powered subwoofer in december and last week at 4:00 in the moring it started getting feedback so loud it shook the house!! The stereo wasn't even turned on, only the power to the woofer. Any ideas??

The subwoofer makes the noise even if it is getting a source signal and makes it if there isn't even anything plugged into it. I'd had the woofer set up like it was for over 4 months with no problems. It's like something fried, but I checked all the circutry and everything looks ok visually. The speaker works fine too, I tested it.
Thanks for the responses guys but I already knew all of this stuff. Something is wrong with the sub itself, I just wondered if anyone had ever had a sub fail like this and what they did about it.

You have to figure out why it is doing that, it shouldn't be doing it and it isn't exactly good for the sub.

I know when I re-arranged my rats nest of cables, just touching the end that plugs into the receiver made the sub hum. I would check the lines that run into the sub, if they short or possibly they are picking up interference, the sub will emit the noise.

First thing I would do, check the cable to the sub, in fact pull it off the sub totally. Look it over and see if it is frayed or anything. This will also help to see if the sub hums with out the cable plugged in, which if it does, it is something physically wrong with the sub itself. I would also try another cable if you possibly can, just to make sure.

If you can't isolate it from there, I would take it in to get looked at in fixed. I don't know Wharfedale's policy, but mosy subs I have looked at over the years come with at least a 1 year warrant. If you keep letting it hum like it is, you could futher damage the sub, if it isn't already.

Putting a subwoofer into an older car with original speakers and stereo.?

I have a chrysler newyorker year 1999 and i want to put a subwoofers in it. I dont want to change my speakers however. I only want to install a Large subwoofer or a few ones, along with a new stereo. Will the subwoofer and stereo work well with the old speakers? or what would you suggest?

It should work fine. The problem you are going to face is, with subwoofers, the midrange and high pitch sounds will probably get drowned out by the low-end, resulting in very muddy, unclear music. It isn't a huge deal, just something to think about. Just get the subs and amp that you want, and if it makes the sound too muddy, just buy some inexpensive replacement speakers. A decent pair will run $80-$100.

The stereo will be fine with the speakers too, and (depending on the model) may add a little more power into them than stock.

how to hook up a home stereo subwoofer to a car?

is it possible? haha i want to try it out.

Sure. You need to know the RMS watts of the sub and double it for a house speaker. This is because car speakers are 4 ohm , house speakers are 8 ohm. You get half the power at 8 ohms.

How to add a subwoofer to stereo system?

Not too good with stereos, I want to add a subwoofer to my car system, what do I need besides a subwoofer to do this?

first off, if you do your research, ask professionals, not the chumps on crutchfield or at best buy. If you wanna do it yourself, more power to you. its not that dificult to do right if you take your time. Youll need a HU with AV outs on it (all aftermarkets do, some stocks do too), an amplifier, and the enclosure for the subwoofer, as well as wiring (ground wire+terminal, 12v line+in line fuses, speaker wire, etc). Do some research on howstuffworks.com, and read into it more. theres plenty of info out there.

What kind of rheostat switch do I use to adjust RCA output from car stereo to my subwoofer?

My car stereo has low-voltage RCA line outputs that is connected to my subwoofer's amplifier. I want to put a line level switch that will control the volume of my subwoofer. What kind of rheostat do i need?

Umm, not a good idea as this will severely inhibit the correct function of the gain control. You could severely do some damage to the subs if clipping is allowed. The gain should match the RMS Volts in the RCA line from the head unit.

The RCA outputs should already be controlled by the head units volume control.

  • How can I get two subwoofers in stereo? - AVForums.com

Since my puny Tangent EVO E5s (while being very decent computer speakers especially for the money) lack some boom, oomph and thump where it's required, I thought that perhaps I could wire two 10" subwoofers to go with the stereo speakers to enhance the bass. Now I have no experience with crossovers, subwoofer amplifiers and the such, but I was thinking of D.I.Y subwoofers to keep the costs down (I'm not ridiculously picky about the quality, just a tad choosy), preferably under 300$ for the subwoofer elements themselves and then some for the amps. If I have to replace my Onkyo TX SR507 I'm fine with that. I understand this can get a bit expensive, but since I'm intending to stick with standmounters,...
