say i got a pair of stereo speakers with 200w each and i had a stereo reciever that was only 100w per channel, would i be able to wire the speakers up to it or would i need more power in the receiver like an amplifier or something?

I think your amp is fine is is that your speakers are saying "I am 200 watt speakers and I can hang with a 100 watt amp because the Amp is still in my ratio and us speakers will be safe for as long as the Amp, don't become more that 200 watts also we are matching the same ohms....? Right" Check your ohms and the Amp is fine because the speakers are design to handle up to a maximum of 200 watts with a minimum of what 20? So I think you are okay just keep [all] amps well ventilated.

I have 4 new speakers rated at 300W max output. The stereo is rated at 50Wx4. Does this mean that at the maximum volume level on the stereo I am only using 1/6 of the speaker's capacity?

This does not seem right because when the stereo level is halfway to maximum the speakers are extremely loud. They are not exactly high-end so I don't expect that 4 car speakers could blast at a volume 12 times higher.

What is the correct relationship between these wattage ratings?

Here are a few facts that might clear things up (or might make them more confusing).

First of all, the "50x4" ratings for the head unit, and the "300 watt" rating for the speakers, are "max" ratings. There's no real standard for setting a "max" power rating, so usually it's just a number picked for marketing purposes. When you're matching a speaker with an amplifier, your best bet is to look at "RMS" ratings. By those standards, the head unit probably produces around 20 watts per channel, and the speakers can probably handle about 50-70.

Second, a speaker's power rating is meant to tell you the highest level of power that the speaker can handle without being damaged from over-powering. It's not meant to suggest a minimum required power. A 100-watt speaker might work perfectly well with a 5-watt input. In fact, if you knew the average power you're probably using when listening to music, you might be surprised at how low it is.

Third, six times the power doesn't mean six times the volume. The relationship between power and volume is logarithmic, not linear. Here's how it works: if you increase the volume enough that you can easily hear the difference, that's a 3dB increase. To make the volume sound twice as loud, you need to increase it by 10dB. An increase of 3dB requires twice as much power from the amp, and an increase of 10dB requires the amplifier to produce ten times as much power.

So, if you're listening to music and using 1 watt of power, then to make it sound twice as loud, you need 10 watts of power. To make it sound twice as loud as that, you'll need 100 watts. And so on.

To go back to your speakers, let's say you're using 20 watts and they can handle up to 50. As long as they sound loud enough and clear enough to you, everything's fine. You're not doing the speakers or your head unit any harm, even if it seems to be a mis-match in power. If you wanted, you could buy a 50-watt-per-channel amplifier. This would be enough to make the speakers noticeably louder.

how can you do this?

Yes they can IF they have stereo audio output connectors (usually color coded red and white RCA jacks). You connect the output connection of your DVD player to the line inputs of your stereo receiver.

Hi there,
I'm planning on throwing a party outside either on a patio or in the park, and music is a Must-Have!
I was wondering if there are any speakers or stereos or things like that, that would be loud enough but that I DON'T have to plug into a wall.

Some ipod docks with speakers have a battery compartment. I know mine does and it is an iHome. I'm pretty sure all iHomes do. I use it all the time for my parties.
