Surround Sound Speakers Bars

I've been reading up on these bars and I'm wondering if any one could Direct me to sites that really get into the nuts and bolts of how they perform and the many ways you can use them in ether a Stereo or surround sound system.say can you use they along with 2 pair of tower speakers(front and back) to create a simulated surround sound system?

If you are talking about soundbars like the Yamaha YSP series then the soundbar IS real surround sound. Even though there are no speakers behind you the soundbar uses the walls to reflect sound in a way that places the effects in the right location. In that case there is no need to add speakers and in fact no way to direct the correct sound to those speakers if you did. The soundbars are most effective of course in certain types of rooms but between the setup and auto calibration they now have they are pretty versatile.

The review of the Surround Sound Bar made specifically for the PS3

It's hooked up through HDMI. I want a surround system with just 2 speakers (or that sound bar that you lay in front of your TV) and a subwoofer. What is recommended?

I have a Logitech 5.1 surround sound speaker set, which I've set up and it runs normally when I play music or video through youtube or anything else.
I have an external sound device as I can't install one into my PC.

Just to let you know, I've installed all the drivers and programmes, the problem is nothing seems to work through iTunes, it plays because you can see the bar going down but no sound comes out of the speakers?

Where is the solution to this? Do I have to set my speakers as 5.1 through iTunes or is there sometihng else a miss?
Please, if someone could help me with getting the music to play through iTunes that that would be a great help, thanks.

1. Double click the speaker icon, on the mixer panel, see if there are any knobs turned all the way down and try turning them up.

2. Also on the mixer, in the preferences, see if you have more than one audio device, select your external one.

3. See if iTunes has a setting for what audio output device to use; again, select your external one.

Do they give surround sound or are they just a good sounding speaker? One of the speakers blew on my home theater and I don't want to have to buy a new speaker or system.

No. Sound bars are usually feeble. They try to fool the ear/brain. You will need a sub-woofer to get any low frequency response at all. The only OK sound bar I've heard is the old Polk surround bar. It was $6-700 and you still had to buy a separate subs (extra $100+).
Surround bars will only work if you have a very convenient rectangular room. Vaulted-ceilings will ruin the acoustic profile the bar needs.
As much as we want to, we cannot defy the laws of physics. A speaker behind me sounds better and more accurate than sound bouncing off 2 walls then at my ear. Bars tend to produce more out of phase sound in my experience (this makes the sound seem hollow or de-localized, meaning you can't tell exactly where a sound is coming from, it just sounds "kind of over there").
Yamaha made a popular sound bar, as well. Still expensive as I recall. Again, the same problems pop up that the sound is never that good. That is unless you get their top dog for $1800 ( http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/produ ctdetail.html?CNTID=556966 ) in which case you might as well buy some awesome speakers like the Kef KHT3005. I have Kef and they truly deserve their top honors.
