Surround speakers?
KLH Five woofer front

I have a wall mounted plasma and want to add surround sound. Can anyone recommend speakers, front pair and centre either long and slim to complement the screen or miniature like Bose. (Not considering Bose after reading this forum). Rears to be small but not necessarily miniature.

Don't go for wireless speakers.

It depends on your budget.

If money is no object, then you could go for something like the Mordaunt Short Genie system. Without a doubt, the Mordaunt Short Genie system has been one of the best reviewed and most highly praised speaker packs of recent times. Take a look for yourself and it's not hard to see why. Unlike its boxy rivals, the satellite speakers with the Genie surround sound system are sculptured from aluminium. The design is further enhanced by a built-in stand that also doubles as a wall mounting bracket for the individual speakers. With an excellent reputation for their subwoofers, you'd expect the packaged sub' to be something special; and you'd be right. Bass is deep yet controlled, and thanks to phase and frequency controls, blends seamlessly with the satellite speakers.

For less than £100, Eltax do a great five-speaker set, with mini speakers for the front three and really good looking slim floorstanders. But you would probably still need to get a woofer/sub-woofer.

You can even get a full set of 5.1 surround sound speakers for less than a tenner! The AS100 is a silver-finished slimline set and even has an active sub-woofer. And it's available at the ridiculously cheap price of £9.99!

How do I setup my surround speakers not play dialogue?
Spot checking the 5.1 surround mix for @IowaPublicTV's DVD of "HEAVEN EARTH: Mass on the Celtic Journey."

I have HK AVR-146 receiver and Bose - acostimas 10 speakers. I am seeing the dialogues are also being played in my surround speakers. my undertanding is that the dialogue should only goto center/front speakers. please advise.

it should be as simple as a click on the receiver or the receiver's remote, you want to be on a "Surround Sound" setting, some on mine are Dolby/DTS surround, movie theater 1, movie theater 2, mono movie, sci fi, adventure, general... my "stereo" and "effect off" and "entertainment" modes are some that would have voice coming from all speakers. Check your manual (online if youve lost it)

WHy cant I get sound from my surround speakers?
SpekrFrek

I purchased a Surround Sound DVD Home Theater System and I get surround sound (From all 5 speakers) when I play a DVD or listen to the built in AM/Fm or play a CD but when I get the audio signal from my new HDTV I can only get the sound from the 3 front speakers. Nothing but a him comes from the 2 rear speakers. I have my TV set to external and on stereo and my Home theater system set to surround but nothing. Is there maybe something I am missing. I am new to surround sound. I know the speakers are hooked up and work as they work with the built in stuff its just with the external device (my HDTV) .

If anyone has a thought please share. Thank you.

Refer to your owner's manual. You should only have to adjust your receiver's surround sound settings for the fix. Make sure all of your speaker connections are secure and your low-level connections are in the multi-channel receiver terminals.

What is the best and economical wire for rear surround speakers ?
Sony Bravia BDV-E280 (BDVE280/BDV-E280CEK/BDVE280CEK)

I am setting up my home theater system. For my surround speakers I need eatch -at least- 50 feet speaker wire. What is the best speaker wire for this set up ? the thinner the better, Is 16 gauge good enough ?
I believe the surround speaker outputs around 25 watts each.
Thanks

The standard answer from speaker companies is 16 or 14 gauge for 25-50ft runs. Greater than 50ft should be 14 or 12 gauge. (see reference from Polk Audio below). I would recommend 14 gauge in your case. You should know that the thicker the cable the lower the resistance and less power it takes to push the signal down the wire. So the thicker the cable the less signal you are losing to resistance. Also remember that one day you may decide to upgrade your system and want the thicker cables which would not be easy to replace especially if they are going inside the walls.

My personal choice is 12 gauge Belden 5000 series Cable from BlueJeansCable.com.
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/spea ker/index.htm

Update: It does not matter at all if the speaker wires are the same length to each channel. The signal travels down the wires at speeds way faster than what your ears could ever detect (near the speed of light). It might start mattering if the wires were different by say several thousand feet which obviously is not the case. Someone might argue that you need to make them the same length to ensure the same resistance which could impact sound level. This also doesn't matter because individual speaker level is easily adjusted (and needs to calibrated anyway) in the receiver settings. So no need to spend extra money on trying to make them all the same.

Hope that helps!

Can I get a surround amp that I can select where speakers go ?
Sony Bravia BDV-E280 (BDVE280/BDV-E280CEK/BDVE280CEK)

I have a TV on one wall with the surround speakers set up for its use. I also have cinema screen on the wall to the right. When this is in use I move speakers around to get the correct set-up. Is there an amp where I can make the right speaker the left speaker, rear speaker the right speaker etc... ?

There are surround receivers available that let you run two set of surround speakers however such receivers are expensive. Check out the Denon AVC A1XVA.
Usually they are meant for running two seperate multi channel systems but in your case these two multiple channels can be the orientation of your speakers. I have never used this model and so I recommend that you check it out at your nearby Denon dealer.

Product Description: The Kenwood RFU-6100 eliminates one of home theater's biggest hassles: wiring the surround speakers! Future Ready wireless surround speaker system uses separate RF transmitter and receiver units that eliminate the speaker AC plugs found on conventional wireless speaker systems and allows you to use higher-quality surround speakers than are typically found in conventional wireless surround speaker systems. The separate RF receiver unit has a built-in high-power digital amplifier for the surround speakers (up to 50 watts x 2), which dramatically improves sound quality over conventional wireless systems, and it can be used up to 100 feet away from the transmitter. Active circuitry reduces noise interference, and 4 selectable RF transmission channels eliminate interference from other RF devices. The Auto Power On/Off function means you never have to turn the RFU-6100 off or on manually.
