It's unlikely that you shredded the cones. Take a 1.5 volt battery (any size) and wire to connect to the speakers. As you tap the wire to the battery, you'll hear the speaker click if the voice coil isn't blown. The usual problem if one speaker stops working is a loose connection. This is common in small diameter cables, and I have that problem right now with one of my computer speakers. The solution is to get a plug of the right size at Radio Shack and replace the offending plug, which you can find by bending the wire or jamming it into the plug. Or get a new wire with matching size plugs. If the only connection is a plug rather than screw terminals, you'll have to take the case apart to connect to the speaker terminals. But if that's the case, I'd bet there's a loose connection at a plug.

It seems like the speakers "jolt" to life only when the volume level crosses a certain threshold. (About 40 to 50% of max volume.) Once the speakers come to life, the volume can be lowered again, and they continue work until I turn off the amp. I never noticed this before moving into my new place. I've tested different speakers and even a different tuner/amp. Could it be the speaker cable? The runs aren't that long - no more than 10 to 25 feet.
That's beacause, if you have a tune of particularly demanding bass then the subwoofer in each speaker can't produce any noise untill cranked above the level you're talking about.
The speakers will be producing noise, just maybe under the the humans hearing range (20hz-2Mhz), however, when cranked above, it enters the hearing range and allows you to do this.
The only solution I can think of is to turn off all bass EQ's (equilisers) and turn on any treble EQ's.
This may not work, if not, you'll just have to buy another set of speakers, or live with your problem.

When testing my surround stereo speakers using the THX Optimizer, the rear speakers put out no audio at all when testing "out of phase". Is that normal?
I would think that would be normal. Whenever I test speakers manually, for phase, I sure don't want there to be more than 2 sources. It's hard enough testing 2 speakers for phase, let alone 4.
If that optimizer has some special software that can do it -- it's news to me, and I would be very impressed!.

I just bought the system today. It is the first one I have ever owned, so I have little knowledge of how they work. When I test the speakers, they all work fine. Could the type of DVD I use affect which speakers work at a certain time, as I have only tried older shows/movies such as The Waltons and black and white westerns? Also, when I switch over to stereo, the one speaker that usually works, stops working and two other speakers bring working fine.
Sounds like your system is working properly.
The source you're using will influence how many speakers are used. Old TV shows, such as the Waltons, are obviously not going to be dolby surround sound.
The back of the DVD will indicate what audio options are available. Usually, it'll be 2.1 (stereo) or 5.1 (surround) Really old material, like those black&white westerns of yours may even be in mono, but your system will simply output the same sound out of your front (but not center) speakers.
Keep in mind that "stereo" only refers to your front right and front left speakers. The other speakers will be silent. "2.1" is stereo with the subwoofer. 5.1, or Dolby Surround, should engage all 5 of your speakers as well as the subwoofer.
Some receivers may give you the option to use what I call "Fakey surround" where it will use your other speakers, but it'll be the same sound from the left or right front speaker.
but when i play a cd only the front speakers work...I have everything connected correctly to the wiring harness purchased...however, I do have 2 extra wires from my alpine aftermarket stereo, Pink/black power antenna and Blue/black remote something(lead). I keep reading the it may have something to do with the Blue/Black remote wire, but I've connected everything there is to connect. Do I have the incorrect harness...it says for 95 toyota(along with every toyota from 77 on) and I do have power antenna which is broken anyway so I have no way to test. Thanks
I would really like to avoid the removal of my in dash wiring harness. ..
Those wiring harnesses are very unreliable in my experience. It's probably not your fault, the harness might not fit the car. They say the harnesses are for a wide range of cars, but I have yet to find one to work after installing several stereos. My advice would be to used the harness that comes with the radio, and attach the wires directly to the wires in your dash. There should be a sticker on your old radio that will tell you which wires are which

Daily Niches ยป Thins To Consider Before Purchasing Bookshelf ...
For beginners, novices, and amateurs buying bookshelf stereo speakers is not an easy task. Because there are many different types of them and each of them may be different from the other in features, build and price range. If you’re planning to buy bookshelf speakers, you really need to make sure you’re getting what you require. Your requirement could be based on your budget, sound quality and the dimension of the room where you want to put the speaker in.
Seriously, you want to make sure that you’re not getting swindled when buying electronic systems so, make sure you hear it when you’re looking at it in person. If you aren’t in person, you should really consider looking into the wattage or the source of the cone, power input, technologies use and other extra features as well.
