Home Speakers Answers
Why do speakers have a case on the back? When a speaker vibrates, it causes compressions and rarefactions out of the front of the speaker. However, wouldn't this mean that the same thing would be going on in the back, but in the opposite sequence? Therefore, would your sound be twice as full or louder if there were no back on your speakers? Hope to hear from you. I asked my prof at university, and he didn't know?!?!?
There are speakers that are setup this way, called dipole speakers. But you cannot mount them in front of a wall, as the rear output would cause reflections from the wall that would cancel out part of the signal from the front output, leading to dips in the frequency response.
So, bottom line, you could do as you suggest, but the back wave would bounce off a wall and cause interference with the front wave, with some frequencies been canceled due to interference.

I got this at an estate sale today. Works great and really good bass.
I am in the process of searching for a decent audio system for use in our university's indoor pool area. The audio system would get daily use and the pool area itself will have a constant high humidity. We used to keep portable stereos in that area and replaced them as they decayed, but we're looking into installing a fixed system for better sound coverage and durability. I am looking for at least 4 speakers around the pool area, and the amp and CD player can be in the lifeguard office which has slightly less humidity. I've looked into marine/weatherproof speakers and most of them appear to be in-wall, which is not something I'm looking for. Any information would be appreciated, thanks!
I have never seen any come in sets of 4 unfortunately. But since you are looking, you want outdoor speakers. I have linked a site below that has a nice selection of outdoor speakers. You should hopefully be able to find what you need on that page.
Good luck!
Hi, I've been here in Japan for 2 years and studied Japanese during University for 2 years. I know lots of grammar and vocab and my listening is pretty good but when I try to do anything serious. People always try to refer me to an English speaker.
When I do have a long conversation with someone I'm usually ok. I often have to further explain what I mean but I can usually do that pretty well.
Some people are nice and tell me I'm great!
Others are more honest and tell me my Japanese is ok but I still have a long way to go before really becoming fluent.
BUT! whenever I ask them what they mean or what I'm doing wrong, they can't explain. They just tell me I don't sound natural or that I'm not 'there' yet.
This is really frustrating for me because I'd like to find work one day here in Japan in a regular Japanese speaking office.
So what do you think?
What separates a 'so-so' Japanese speaker from a 'fluent' or 'natural' sounding Japanese speaker?
Thanks to everyone for the great advice but I'm not really worried about pronunciation. I'm more worried about speaking 'broken' or 'strange' Japanese. The reason I am worried is because even though I do like teaching English, I would like to try something else one day. And I feel that if my Japanese isn't good enough, I won't be able to do that. That thought kinda depresses me. I see people on TV all the time like Pakkun and I wonder how they are so good.
I guess I have to just keep on studying. Oh and thanks to naokolovesanimals too. I really enjoy teaching English but there are so many English teachers here in Japan that when most people meet me it's always their first question. 'You're an English teacher right?"
It's starting to bother me. Some Japanese people here have a negative view of English teachers and think they can't get a 'real' job.
I like teaching English. That was my choice. That and to learn Japanese was why I came to Japan.
I don't think you will ever sound like a Japanese speaker unless you start to live there before age of 16. I live in US now for a long time and trid very hard to speak English without accent and got tutoring for my accent for a long time. But the teacher told me not to worry about my accent because I speak well and as long as I don't speak too fast, people understand. Many people have told me that they like my accent because it's charming. Anyway, I have learned to accept my accent and don't have any frustration now. In US, I have worked in an office and now as a nurse WITH my accent. I still speak broken English but people understand and that's what count to me. I don't have any complex about being different now because I worked on my inner confidence. All I know is that people who can speak Japanese almost like native Japanese are asians and Arabians. In very rare occasions I hear Americans and Europeans speak almost like Japanese. But I think those people lived in Japan when they were small or lived before the age of 16 and some are still living in Japan. Johnny san, you are always an American to Japanese because of your looks no matter what you try. If you accept it and speak cleary with confidence, they will accept you and might eventually forget that you are an American. Most Japanese love to laugh and attracted to funny, crazy people so try to learn some jokes from joke books and joke with them; don't worry about your accent. Personally, I always love to hear Japanese language with foreign accent because it's so charming, sometimes, sexy. ha ha. Try to go out to sushi bars with Japanese men friends and have some drink there. You learn more about Japanese in those places because they will be more straight there.
PS: Do you know Jero the black singer? He speak Japanese without much accent but he was always with his Japanese grandma and sang enka since he was very small.
NOTE: You ARE intelligent person, if not, you can't be a teacher especially in foreign country, you speak at least 2 languages. I respected teachers very much in school. Don't forget you are an educator
Addition: If you love teaching English, keep teaching it with confidence, seisei is a highly respected job in Japan (much more than in US). No matter what you do, people always tell you unpleasant things. Heck with those negative thinkers. Keep working with Japanese language with books and Japanese people. I teach Japanese online sometimes. If neccessary, use voice in yahoo messenger. If you want to, email me because I want to help you because I know pretty well how you feel.

it sounds legit. I would do more research online before i continuewith this.
i don't know what happened ! one day i woke up to go on my computer and it had ho sound, i went to the control panel and checked sound and audio devices , it said that there was no audio device.
the settings for the devices were all set to low, and i cant change the settings, they are pale so i cant move them.
i went to device manager after reading another question and under other devices there is a sub file that says multimedia auto controller, that has a yellow ! by it. it says that the drivers are not installed, iv tried reinstalling them and rolling it back ect, but the computer cant find it and i don't know what file it is, so i have no idea what to do, my speakers
say 691 multimedia speaker system
also, how do i find out what computer model i have, i know its a dell, but i cant find the model, i got it from indiana university if that helps
i have a desktop
Just go to google and type in dell audio drivers. Once you get to the dell website, just look up your computer model. It should be printed somewhere on your laptop.

DEMO: Emo Labs rethinks the home theater speaker | VentureBeat
Emo Labs says it has developed a speaker that delivers great sound, despite the limited space in high-definition TVs. The company describes its speakers as “invisible” and “zero-footprint,” and says the experience is like hearing great stereo sound coming directly from the television display. It’s launching at DEMOfall 09 , the technology conference co-produced by VentureBeat.
While on-stage, the company acknowledged that you can get great sound quality with external speakers, but those come with their own disadvantages. There are lots of cables to connect, and you also deal with the sometimes disconcerting experience of seeing video and audio coming from two different locations.
