i want to buy a car stereo from best buy, and mount it on my house above my deck with speakers.
Yes there is a way. I remember going to a marine supply store and you can purchase a plastic type cover which can be opened and closed to protect the radio from water. The cover is clear so you can read the display on the radio while it is closed. It works out good if your radio has a remote control so that you only open the cover to change a cd.
On Edit: Make sure your circuits are GFI protected as electricity and water are not a good combination.

I have a 2 speaker home stereo laying around that I would like to use outside. Is there some kind of diy solution to keep water out of the electrical components, while not muffling the sound?
The speakers are connected to the back of the stereo by a simple wire that is stripped off at the end and pinched by the metal thing that's the input. Sorry I can't be more descriptive!
Is this possible? Or am I just out of luck...I don't have too much money left over after refinishing furniture for the outdoor area (that's why I'm trying to use this old stereo instead of buying a new outdoor one) so any cheap ideas are welcome.
i seriously doubt it. your best bet is to keep it under an awning, or something similar. electronics need to be completely sealed off from water....if even the slightest bit gets onto the circuit board it will ruin the device. so just bring it out when you want to use it...or keep it inside and put the speakers in the windows when you want to listen to music outside.
