Two Way Radios Answers
I have a company where my workers are spread out through out the city, the Midland two way radios have a range of 26 miles, or so the package says. I would like to know if these would be good for a 20 mile range to contact the workers?
The only way you can get this kind of range in a city is by using a repeater on a hilltop or tall building. The easiest way to do this is to go through a local 2-way radio shop that offers this kind of service. You pay a bit for the access but you don't have to try and license a frequency, install and maintain a facility at a hilltop, pay rent, etc. Another option, if you have company cell phones, is to get what they describe a p2t (push to talk) service on the cell phones. Your employees use the cell phones as walkie-talkies and just push a transmit button. Again you have to pay for this service but you will have to pay in one way or another no matter which way you go.
Motorola T9500 Talkabout® GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radios with 25-Mile Range sold on www.sportsmansgeardaily.com for $43 on 01/05/09 Overview: The Motorola ...
I'm looking for some good 2-way radios. Multiple channels is nice. I'd like to get at least a 5 mile range. A lot of the radios say they work up to 26 miles but a lot of people say they couldn't get reception past one or two miles.
It would be nice if the price range was within 50-100 dollars.
Also a good holster recommendation would be nice for use with the radio.
The advertised range may be true however, the radios should be at line-of-sight with each other. It is how manufacturers determine range.
In normal use especially when there are obstructions like hills, trees, power lines or buildings, the range may be reduced as much as 75%. So the advertised 26 miles may be shorter than 5 miles.
Quality wise, one brand may not be much better than the other.

A little boy wanted $100.00 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the $100.00.
When the postal authorities received the letter to God, USA, they decided to send it to the President. The President was so amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy a $5.00 bill. The President thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.
The little boy was delighted with the $5.00 bill and sat down to write a thank-you note to God, which read:
Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that for some reason you sent it through Washington, DC, and those assholes deducted $95.00 in taxes.
A pretty young student walked in to her professor's office late one afternoon the day before midterm exams. She glanced down the hall, closed his door and knelt before him pleadingly.
"I would do anything to pass this exam," she said as she leaned closer to him, stroked her hair and gazed meaningfully into his eyes. "I mean..." she whispered, "I would do... anything."
The professor returned her gaze. "Anything?" he asked.
"Anything," she replied.
His voice softened. "Really? Anything?" he asked again.
"Absolutely anything," she once again replied.
He leaned close to the woman and lowered his voice to a whisper.
"Would you... study?"

A man walks into a supermarket and notices a beautiful woman staring at him.
She stares for quite some time, so finally the man asks, "Do I know you?"
The woman answers "I think you're the father of one of my kids."
The man thinks for a minute, then realizes this kid she is talking about must be the result of the one and only time he ever cheated on his wife.
He says to the woman, "Are you that exotic dancer that was at my best friend's bachelor party about 5 years ago? You know, the one I did it with on the pool table while everyone was watching?"
The woman looks at him horrified and says, "No, I'm your son's teacher."

Ol' Fred had been a religious man who was in the hospital, near death. The family called their preacher to stand with them. As the preacher stood next to the bed, Ol' Fred's condition appeared to deteriorate and he motioned frantically for something to write on.
The pastor lovingly handed him a pen and a piece of paper, and Ol' Fred used his last bit of energy to scribble a note, then he died. The preacher thought it best not to look at the note at that time, so he placed it in his jacket pocket.
At the funeral, as he was finishing the message, he realised that he was wearing the same jacket that he was wearing when Ol' Fred died.
He said, "You know, Ol' Fred handed me a note just before he died. I haven't looked at it, but knowing Fred, I'm sure there's a word of inspiration there for us all."
He opened the note, and read out loud, "Hey, you're standing on my oxygen tube?"

(By the way, yes, if you break it down, this is an alternative medicine question. Walking is a both a cure and a form of prevention of lifestyle disease, and it's 100% natural.)
Is it possible to live with no car? I can walk and ride a bike, but what about my three year old? When he's seven or eight I can't put him in a stroller, and I can't make him walk several miles round trip.
But if I keep my car I'll be so tempted to drive it; it's sooo much easier. But having no car is better for your lifestyle. (I could always rent one for a road trip or for hauling something.)
It's VERY EASY to feel spoiled to the car; a/c, radio, cushioned seats, privacy, leisure while in motion. But driving is also a big source of stress, and the number one source of gradual weight gain over the years. The heart gets weak and all.
Why not just join a health club? To me, that's a very boring alternative. I love to VENTURE OUT into the world and see the sights while walking with a purpose TO a PLACE. It just makes it seem so much more worthwhile to me to actually cover some distance on foot and come home with a bag of groceries. It's more fulfilling to walk with a purpose. And it's fun.
BUT can I have this lifestyle with a young child? Would it be too hard on him to walk with me before a certain age? Should I just pull him around in a little red wagon?
I KNOW not owning a car is extreme, but so is my severe addiction to driving everywhere. Because of a bad case of driving anxiety, I didn't get my first license until I was 26. Within two years, without changing my eating habits, I had put on over 40 pounds and my blood pressure went up. That was 12 years ago. I was very fit before then. I KNOW that walking keeps people fit. I also know one mile in a car will turn into ten or twenty miles for me, like an alcoholic with a sip of beer.
Yes. when I move to Morocco I won't have a car. There is so much public transportation that having a car is not an absolute necessity. You can travel anywhere in the country without one, but it may take some time and delays for a trip outside of a good-size town. Some people do have cars but it is considered selfish to drive alone and have no other riders in it for any length of time. It is common for people to stand in certain spots and wait for either a public taxi or a private driver on the edge of towns. You ask the driver how much, most private owners charge about the same amount as a taxi driver, and it helps pay his gas too (for example a salesman who has to travel 100 or more miles on a route each day). And, yes I have taken rides with private drivers along with my friends. Felt very safe and enjoyed the scenery. I have also taken a private taxi from one city nearly 200 miles to another city, cost about the same as a bus ride. And the driver stopped and let us eat lunch and use the restroom too. All-in-all it doesn't cost any more for the transportation charges than buying gas for a personal car, and you don't have to pay for insurance and other charges. The only real problem is that a Mercedes taxi will pick up 6 passengers (2 in the front and 4 in the back). If you don't want to be crowded in the backseat, you have to pay for the other places.
There are also affordable buses, donkey or horse carts in most cities, towns, and villages, trains, and some buy mopeds or motorbikes. Not unusual to see a whole family with children wedged between the parents riding a motorcycle.
What is even more amazing is that an "evening stroll" is the tradition in Morocco. Most evenings, except when it is pouring rain, couples, families and anyone who able to walk go out and walk to the downtown, bazaar or central plaza. Plazas and bazaars and small restaurants are open till 11 or 12 at night, you can stop and get a hot bowl of soup or a drink when the weather is chilly. Most times this is at least a mile or more each way. Many of these people have already walked back and forth to work and perhaps walked home and back for lunch (most workplaces allow for a two-hour lunch). Children walk to visit a friend or run errands for their mother, people walk to the souks (outdoor markets) to get fresh fruits, vegetables and meats and to a bakery to buy bread. I've heard that the average for walking there is around 10 miles per day for healthy people. I will use one of those rolling wire carts to haul my groceries when I have to get something heavy. It is fun to walk with a few friends and stop and shop together too. Morocco is a very social-able place and people meet up and get together this way, and I've never seen fat kids like we have here in the US either.
I am renting a 26' u-haul truck for a 3000 mile move to Canada from San Antonio. It will be just me and my two dogs. BORING!!! I am used to an awesome sterio in my truck - which I sold. What's the best, fastest, cheapest way to listen to my music. I don't want to do headphones - dangerous when driving. I also want to listen to the radio at times. There is only a radio in the U Haul. Thanks.
Ya I thought about XM but I want to listen to MY music, also will one purchased here work in Canada? Can anyone recommend the type of cd player and is there a portable that can run off the cigarette lighter - woh! there better be a cigarette lighter - I need to charge my phone and camera.....
Conejote, Dude - 3000 miles in a 26' fully loaded truck in two days. Will you be my driver?
