Two Way Radios Answers
i know there is 2 types of two way radio, non licensed and licensed.
you can get about 5 miles depending on radio on non licensed but what type of range can you get with licensed radios??
If you have a ham license, you can get a VHF or UHF rig and talk to another ham on the International Space Station. You can also use the same gear to bounce a signal off a satellite from one side of the Atlantic to the other.
If you are using your HF gear, at 100 watts, with a simple wire antenna, you can sit in your den or bedroom in Ohio, and have a conversation with a guy in Rome Italy or Madrid Spain.
A number of years ago, the Japanese Amateur Radio League developed something called D-Star. It utilizes radios that are normally used in conjunction with repeaters to communicate with hams across a wide area, on a VHF band that usually only manages 25 or 30 miles.
What they came up with was a system that digitizes voice communications, through a network of repeaters that are connected to one another by the Internet, allowing a ham in Tokyo with a 5 watt handheld transceiver to talk to another ham in Chicago with his 5 watt handheld transceiver. They called it D-Star. Right now the only company making D-Star gear is ICOM.
Ok, now for a shameless plug
I have been a licensed ham since 1968, with a few years lapsed in college, after which I started over from scratch. If you are interested in communication, experimentation, and possibly being the guy who can still get the message through when the cellular networks, and sometimes their towers, have crashed, then maybe ham radio is for you.
I am going to include a link here.
good luck

I'm looking at buying a set of Two-Way radios for my small consulting business. I would like as long of range as possible since I know you get less distance due to building obstructions & weather conditions. Both radios should have a recharging base they plug into. I've seen up to 18 mile GMRS radios but would like to see if I can find longer range. I can also apply for a FCC license if needed.
I'm looking into this as an alternative to wireless phones since I would only be speaking with one other person 95% of the time (my dispatch). Using these type of radios would cut down on the need for a larger calling plan with phones since most of my clients are within the same 5-10 mile range. I don't need private/encrypted channels but the FRS channels around here are too busy with other users.
Use of GMRS requires a license. In a business, *each person* using the radios would require their own license. Businesses cannot get a GMRS license as they are non-individuals. "Consumer grade" GMRS radios with those false 18 mile range claims will not work for the application you need. Range is typically 2 miles or less.
With a base station, and a mobile radio, you could swing this range with GMRS. *Maybe* a base and a handheld would work. You need that antenna height.
OR, you could go with something in the Business Radio service. A repeater would be needed. You probably need to consult with a reputable communications company and have them set you up. Equipment costs, licensing, and repeater lease fees could get costly.

The range of 5 miles isn't a problem, but the 10 M deep is. I don't know of any VHF Marine radios that meet that spec. Is it possible that an decimal point got omitted and it should be 1 meter?

I want to take some 2 way radios out there when I go skiing so my friends and I can keep in touch when we get seperated or go and do our own things around the resort. I have seen two way radios with a 5 mile range but I don't know if this will be wide enough for the whole resort.
Does anyone know what sort of square milage it covers?
5 mile range may not be good enough. You have to remember that the two-way range isn't the same on the mountain. Lots of obstacles that limit line-of-sight. I've owned 5-mile and 10 mile range radios. The 10 milers were superior. In most resorts towns, I could still get a signal from my friends who were still on the slopes when I was at the hotel. Since the 10 mile radios aren't that much more, you may was well spend a few bucks for more them.
I am looking for a 2 way radio that has a usable range of more than 5 miles. And it needs separate chargers if the pack contains two or more radios. Please help!!!!
Five miles is starting to be a little farther than most portable two-way radios will operate reliably unless conditions are perfect. If there are obstructions (buildings, hills, etc) between the radios they probably won't work at this distance.
To communicate over longer distances reliably, you may need to use what is known as a "repeater". Repeaters are typically located on a tall building or hilltop and relay the signal from one radio to the other. You can easily cover distances of 25 to 50 miles or more using hand-held radios with repeaters. Repeaters are installed by private groups or companies and are often shared with other users either for free or for a monthly charge.
If these radios are for strictly personal use, you and your associates may want to consider becoming licensed as amateur radio operators. You can buy portable amateur radio "walkie-talkies" fairly inexpensively, and there are lots of repeaters which you can use at no charge in most areas of the country.
If these radios are for business use, you can't use amateur radio. I would then suggest you look at buying General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios. These are a "cousin" of the Family Radio Service (FRS) radios that are sold everywhere but are capable of being used with GMRS repeaters. Do a web search for "GMRS repeaters" to see if one is available in your area. You may need to pay a monthly fee to use a GMRS repeater.
Another option is a business band radio. The business band radio works very much like the GMRS radio except you are using commercial grade equipment and paying to use a shared repeater. Fairly expensive but very reliable.
A final option would be to use the walkie-talkie feature on Sprint/Nextel phones. If you only need a couple of radios, this may be your best choice.
Good luck!
