I'm 24 and have dealt with two-way since I was 9, but need help researching and finding what would be the best handheld radio with the most wattage output.
Commercial handheld radios are pretty much limited to 4 watts of power for UHF and 5 watts for VHF. The unlicensed radios are typically limited to 1/4 watt. You can't get any serious range going handheld to handheld. The lower power and small antenna limits the reach. Depending on terrain (buildings, trees, water, hills, etc) you might get 5 miles or so. The unlicensed radios claim 1 mile but seldom get this far. You would need to use a repeater to boost the signal strength and range. You can pay for repeater access from a 2-way radio shop. You can also become a ham and use a ham repeater. Kenwood radios are a good value. Motorola is good but tends to be pricey. Icom is also a good brand. There are many other brands available.

I'm looking into buying a two way radio for my next skiing trip so I can keep in touch with where my family is on the slopes while I go off piste with my friend.
I want a radio with the largest range but I'm not sure what the largest range is without a licence in the UK and Europe.
Can anyone fill me in on whats what with radio laws in UK and Europe etc and recomend a good set of two way radios that isn't gonna cost the earth?
I was thinking something with a 10 mile range?
10 mile unlicenced? Not a hope in hell.
I have a cheapy pair of PMR446 (no licence req'd) for skiing. As long as we're both on the same side of the mountain (or opposite sides of a valley) then I've never had a problem. Range is about 3 or 4 miles across a valley.
I won't bore you with the laws and regulations, but unlicenced 446MHz radios have a power limit of 0.5W. This can be tweaked by someone who knows what they are doing ;-)
Google for PMR446. Have fun off-piste!

A lot of two way radios do not work in schools because of interference. Are there some that do work despite many walls and rooms and furniture inbetween? Also we need a quad pack for under £100!! Its not much to work with, but any advice is greatly appreciated.
Hi
I work with a Walkie Talkie (two way radio) company and I was speaking to them the other day as they have just kitted out a school which focuses on children with autism, I have emailed them so they can provide me with the information that relates to your question.
If you want to visit their website anyway, you may do so here

I will post again tomorrow with the information they give me :)
Money is not an issue but I need something that will work a long distance and is reliable.
What do you mean by a long way. A hand-held radio will only work for a few miles. A vehicle mounted radio may go for 50 miles. It depends on frequency and transmit power. To cover a really long distance you will need a radio that goes through a repeater. There are commercial systems that provide this type of service. You should be able to rent the radios and pay for the service on a monthly basis. Check with 2-way radio dealers in your area or in the area you will be vacationing at.

Best Indie Music Reviews, Interviews, and Everything Independent ...
Some background?
The idea behind our Random Keywords Review Challenge was simple: we get or come across lots of music we’d like to bash with a nasty review. Instead, we’ve devised a way to say things in a funnier way by asking our friends around the web to come up with 5-6 key terms that need to be fit into every review. This makes us think things through and, maybe, causes us to laugh at the review more instead of feeling so damn jaded. If the review gets all the terms into the piece, and thus makes it through the challenge successfully, SMS buys them a shirt from Elbo.ws . Not sure what we’ll do the next time, but I am sure I can wing it.
