i'm from malaysia.. i;m looking for a in-car walkie talkie...(like police scanner), i looking the in-car walkie talkie that also have heller (i dont know how to spell)... this is for my club.. willing to apply license
i'm not trying to trace police radio... just a simple mobile radio that put inside ur car and have heller with it

You mean a cb...but it is illegal to trace the police...

It depends on what kind of Walkie talkie it is. And if it has CB channels built into it. And also what kind of antenna it has. You can get and outside antenna that mounts on to the roof of your car. That will plug into some walkie talkies. It will increase your range. By a couple more miles.

And somebody made the response that CB radios don't get out very far. Well he doesn't no much about CB radios. With the right setup you can talk all of the way across the United States. It depends on the atmosphere conditions.

Me and my friends often have long road trips in two seperate cars and we would like to have a two-way communication device for talking between the two cars. Ideal would be something which switches itself on when the car starts and then we can talk.

1. One way can be a walkie-talkie, but it requires you to switch each time you want to talk.

2. Cellphones with speakerphone/bluetooth.

But I am looking something like an intercom which is on always (after the car starts.)

Any suggestions are welcome.

my friend and i are traveling across country; one of us driving a moving van, the other a car. we'd like to keep in communication. is there a brand of walkie-talkies that would be good for this? we don't want to use CB radios. thanks in advance.

Probably the best thing would be a pair of FRS hand-helds. They are inexpensive, reliable, and usually provide pretty good communications. They claim up to a mile, and sometimes will do that, but normally you can count on 1/2 mile at least.

I am not talking about the technology that is used for Nextel push to talk but just plain old peer to peer walkie talkie. My phone has a camera and mp3 player and I could see a need to be able to communicate via walkie talkie to other cars during road trips or to my wife while in different parts of a store without using cell minutes.

Most of Nextel's rate plans include unlimited walkie-talkie minutes, so you really don't need to worry about using walkie-talkie minutes. And, most plans also include free mobile-to-mobile cellular calls (between any Sprint and/or Nextel phone) for an additional $5 for Nextel phones. For Sprint phones, mobile-to-mobile is free, but you don't have the walkie-talkie feature (except on hybrid ic502 phone, which uses Sprint cellular and Nextel walkie-talkie).

But, to answer your question - some of the newer Nextel phones have a feature called "Direct Talk". Direct Talk is just like a regular off-the-shelf walkie-talkie - it doesn't use minutes. But, you have to switch to Direct Talk mode to use it, and you cannot receive cellular or Nextel Nationwide Walkie-Talkie calls while you are in Direct Talk mode. However, your phone calls will go to voicemail.

Nextel's web site states that Direct Talk only works with the i315, i325 or i325 IS, but it is also available on the i560, i580, i355, i670, i760, i850, i870 and i880.

And, the effective range is usually 1-2 miles in town, and 5-6 out in the country - as long as you aren't in the mountains. Direct Talks works really well.
