Two Way Radios Answers

How do two-way radios work?

I'm thinking about buying a few Portable radios (The kind you would see at a FD or PD.) for my air soft team. I was just curious how I can get this set up and if I need any equipment for this. Would I need a base with an antenna to run the radios? How do the frequencies work? Cheap radio suggestions? Please help!! Thanks

The police and fire department uses commercial grade 2-way radios you pay quite a lot for, plus you need a license to use them.

I recommend you get FRS radios, unless there is some reason they will not work. By law, they are only point to point.
They have channel numbers (like a TV has) and "privacy" codes, so you don't need to worry about frequencies.

Thinking of getting a two way radio?

I was reading up about them and read somewhere that any unlicensed (PMR446) radio from any brand is compatible with any other PMR446 radio. Does this mean that someone else in the area can pick up your conversations? Or alternatively, will you be pestered by your handset picking up other people? Really not sure how they work at all ! Any recommendations? Cheap as possible please !!
Meant to say - available in UK please

PMR -Public Mobile radio. 446 is the freq. range in MHz. Most quality radios will enable the operator to choose from 5 to 10 freq.'s that are burned into the radios microprocessor. Another thing we do is " lock " the receiver where it must see 2 things - Correct freq. ( 446.010 MHz for example ) and 2 nd a code. Motorola set the standard in the industry back in the 50's. There are 32 of them standardized on all radios. So i can have shared users of a freq and give them different " codes " and no one will hear the others unless the code matches. It's more complex than that but I try to simplify for you. E mail me if you need.

Is there a cheap free easy way to create a radio station that spans a couple miles?

You know, to just cover a city or two?

Where to buy a cheap 3 channel radio controller for remote controlled hovercraft?

I'm planning to build a remote controlled hovercraft and I'd like to buy a radio control for it that has two 'up and down' lever switches to control the two forward and reverse fans and an on off switch to control the lift fan.

Does anyone know where to buy one? I'm looking for something fairly cheap (binary signal, short range) but I haven't had any luck finding one yet.

Thanks for any help.

I found a link online where u can buy radio controller.

Repeater Tower information , Air Time Two-way radio?

I have been tasked with a project I know little to nothing about...

I am a new appointed area watch commander for a Law Enforcement Agency that has recently expanded into a new area that we didn't use to service... It is several hours from the nearest TWO WAY communication setup that we already have...

Now I know little to nothing about TWO-WAY Radios and I did find several local radio shops (all closed this weekend) that may know about renting a tower...

I have heard some talk that leasing a tower, or sharing, is as cheap as 14-17 dollars a month...

We already have the radios (both 400, and 800 MHZ) and ready to use them...

Does anyone know some more insight on this???

Also is it usually only local companies that will have towers available or is it something I could find with MOTOROLA and they have them all over??

Just let me know..

I would suggest checking with the local ham clubs. I have the link here.

You may already be familiar with the people in your area through Emergency Management agencies.

My guess is that if there are towers available, some of the guys, particularly the ones working on their own Amateur radio repeaters, will know where to find them and who to call about getting an antenna up there. You may be able to reach some of them on a Sunday.

The public service part of our hobby is one of the reasons the FCC is giving us spectrum space, so helping the police is not much of a stretch for most hams.
