i need a two way radio walkie talkie for my family?

atleast 18 miles range. so that we can communicate to each other with that miles not below 15 miles. i want to make it 18 for accuracy. we live on a city, so what walkie talkie is the best? thanks and God Bless

Nothing available that will do this. All those radios you see advertised with these outrageous range claims are totally false. I can't even make that range on my amateur radio equipment. (This is direct point-to-point, handheld communications, without a repeater as all consumer-grade equipment is made for)

All GMRS equipment requires a license. With your license you can use repeaters through GMRS. Other options include an amateur radio license, which requires a test.

My family (two small children) will be attending the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with a showtime of 1 p.m

Our bus leaves at seven at night. Where should we go after the show and until our bus leaves? Any suggestions? We are going with another couple and their two children also. (Children are in elementary school). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please remember our time constraints and that we are unfamiliar with the city.

Rockefeller Center - if you're there on Nov. 28 for the Christmas tree lighting.

A walk along 5th Ave. to see the Shop-window decorations.

A visit to FAO Schwartz - it'd be like visiting a magical land of toys.

Kids' events - see what NY kids do and you can't go wrong by following some of their activities:

Good luck and have a fun time... NY can be a pretty fun place for kids!

What's the best two way radio to take skiing in Europe?

I'm looking into buying a two way radio for my next skiing trip so I can keep in touch with where my family is on the slopes while I go off piste with my friend.
I want a radio with the largest range but I'm not sure what the largest range is without a licence in the UK and Europe.
Can anyone fill me in on whats what with radio laws in UK and Europe etc and recomend a good set of two way radios that isn't gonna cost the earth?
I was thinking something with a 10 mile range?

10 mile unlicenced? Not a hope in hell.

I have a cheapy pair of PMR446 (no licence req'd) for skiing. As long as we're both on the same side of the mountain (or opposite sides of a valley) then I've never had a problem. Range is about 3 or 4 miles across a valley.

I won't bore you with the laws and regulations, but unlicenced 446MHz radios have a power limit of 0.5W. This can be tweaked by someone who knows what they are doing ;-)

Google for PMR446. Have fun off-piste!

Must you obtain a FCC License for family use (including children) of two way radios with GMRS?

"If you operate a radio that has been approved exclusively under the rules that apply to FRS, you are not required to have a license. FRS radios have a maximum power of ½ watt (500 milliwatt) effective radiated power and integral (non-detachable) antennas. If you operate a radio under the rules that apply to GMRS, you must have a GMRS license. GMRS radios generally transmit at higher power levels (1 to 5 watts is typical) and may have detachable antennas."

First, a comment to everyone who’s been following this drama … thank you for your support. Your emails and comments have been incredible. Dear Mr. Mehta,

You wrote, “The Illinois Family Institute’s Laurie Higgins is going after me (and my job) again.”

I have never in any context suggested that you should be fired or that you should resign. In fact, I don’t believe the school has any legal right to fire you. You should have fact-checked before you posted that inaccurate statement.
