Two Way Radios Answers

GMRS radio frequency to use in USA (two way radios)?

So I'm driving from Canada to the US with another group. As we will have two cars and would like to avoid roaming charges, I figured it would make more sense to use two GMRS radios to keep in contact while we drive.

The question is I am unaware of what the laws are regarding radio frequencies and which ones are save to use vs which ones must be avoided.

Does anyone know what channels/sub channels I can use south of the border as I travel in Albany and New Jersey?

You need a license with the FCC for GMRS.

You can use FRS and CB with no license. The frequencies are the same in The USA and Canada for that. Just use your best judgment for what channel to use.

which GMRS (two way radio) has the highest talk time?

i work in a press. it is loud and communication is crucial.

im looking the longest talk time and i also would like to know if it will work in a lot of noise in the background.

...and what are the construction workers using?

GMRS radios list their transmit range under ideal conditions. The fine print typically states the battery life under assumptions such as 5% talk time. Talk time is all about the batteries you're using.

For maximum battery life, use batteries with the longest milli-Ampere-hour (mA-h) rating and talk (transmit) as little as possible.

GMRS/FRS two way radio confusion?

i have 7 GMRS/FRS radios and no gmrs liecence nor do i plan on getting one as i wish to only use the FRS channels

the manual on the maxus radios stated that only channels 1-7
are FRS only and the manual on the motorola talkabout radios
stated that channels 8-14 are FRS only

BUT at the FCC web site stated that 1-7 are "shared" between GMRS/FRS and 8-14 are strictly FRS only

basicly what im asking is can i use channels 8-14 on my maxus radios without the need of a GMRS liecence?

You may use channels 8-14 without a license. You may use channels 1-7 without a license ONLY if you use *low* power. Use of high power puts your power output over legal FRS power limits.

You could eliminate all confusion and just get a GMRS license. This will allow you full use of all channels.

Those who say it is all right to use all channels without a license are criminals. You are doing the right thing by asking your questions and operating within the limits of your operating authority.

Does a two way CB radio work with a pair of two way walkie talkies?

I'm on amazon and I need a communications unit for my farm and radios would be perfect. I'm looking at two products: Midland 1001Z 2-Way CB Radio, and Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4 50-Channel 36-Mile Waterproof 2-Way GMRS Radio. Can you communicate well between these two products. I was wondering because they both say two way.

GMRS and CB are different frequencies.

GMRS radio originally came out in the 1960’s and was called citizens radio back then. Radio use became very popular in the 1970’s and was becoming common place. The popularity of such radios brought down the cost, while manufactures increased production. Today, one can purchase such a device at a minimal cost. GMRS radios can be purchased anywhere from $50.00 - $3000.00; however, the general price for a quality radio is somewhere around $150.00. There are also many two way radio accessories you can buy to make using the radio more convenient. Some common accessories include battery chargers, protective cases, headsets and base stations.
