I recently bought a FRS/GMRS 2 way walkie talkie in the US. This is my first walkie talkie purchase. We just bought it to communicate between cars on a family road trip. I have no idea what license the small print is referring to. I just need the walkie talkie to communicate to a car that will not even be a mile a head of mine for a family roadtrip we are planning to take.
Can someone kindly explain what needs to be done.
You require a GMRS license for the GMRS frequencies. This license is now $85.
You may use the FRS only channels without a license. These are 8-14 on your radios.

I would like to get GMRS/FRS walkie talkie in US and wanted to use it in India. Do we need to get any license or without license we can use that? Please advise me.
Not legal. GMRS/FRS is not authorized there. You would have to get whatever is legal to use there.
I am going to the one in valdosta GA.
Well, it depends. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. It depends on the weather and what frequency the parks' members are using. I personally prefer the cellphones to the walkies now but take them and hopefully they will work pretty well for you.

GMRS walkie-talkies are cheap, but there#39;s a catch - Article ...
Q:The little GMRS walkie-talkies have gotten much cheaper, and now I’m thinking about buying a set. But I saw this notice about getting a license. What’s up with that? Answer: You are right about the price drop. Decent General Mobile Radio Service sets can be had for $30 to $40 now from Amazon, Best Buy, Radio Shack and Wal-Mart . . . basically everywhere.
