Is it legal to drive whilst using a hand held two way radio?

I heard there was an exemption for this in the road traffic act with regard to the prohibiton of telephone usage whilst driving(in the UK)
Just wondering as I have seen police officers driving whilst using their radios, and buses have radios which the drivers also use.
I have been eating donuts... but not while driving (or riding my bike!) lol

It is specifically excluded from the legistlation and applies to everyone. As a result anyone can use a hand held two way radio whilst driving.

What is the difference between FRS & GMRS with the motorola two-way radios?

I am going on a cruise in the caribean and would like to get some simple hand held radios to keep in touch with family & friends. While shopping for radios I noticed that some are FRS and some are GMRS. Does anyone know the difference and benefits of each?

FRS & GMRS are on different frequencies (i.e., channels), and different rules apply. FRS is limited to half a watt of power and has other restrictions, like non-detachable antennas. Some GMRS channels can be used with up to 50 watts, while others are limited to five watts, although most handheld radios don't put out more than a watt or two.

If you are going on a cruise in the Caribbean, you may be under the jurisdiction of several countries, as well as the captain of the ship, so you might need permission and/or licenses from those jurisdictions. In the United States, a GMRS license is $85 for five years and can be easily obtained online through the FCC's Universal Licensing System (ULS) at http://wireless.fcc.gov by first obtaining a FRN, then using the FRN to obtain the license.

As was mentioned, don't believe the advertised range of the handheld radios, especially if they will be used in a metal structure like a ship.

Will a 9' dingi and a 15hp outboard make it to Ensenada?

Will a 9' dingi and a 15hp outboard make it to Ensenada?
My two friends are going to ensenada in their dads 9' dingi. They asked me to join them and I said yes. Can anyone share any advise on where to dock and how much fuel we should take? Also, will a hand held two way radio work to communicate with my family? My wife wants me to bring my 9 year old but I am worried he might get sea sick. Any advise will help. Also, how long will it take me traveling at full throttle?
I will be leaving from Long Beach, CA

The Pacific ocean isn't "pacific", storms come up all the time. A nine foot boat isn't sea worthy for a trip any longer than from the beach to a close by fishing ground. You would be nuts to take a child on such a fool's errand.

  • Hand-Held Cellphone Ban While Driving On Way | News | Guide2.co.nz

    By Maggie Tait of NZPA

Wellington, Aug 13 NZPA - Drivers will not be allowed to text or talk on hand-held cellphones from November -- a move welcomed by cellphone companies.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce announced the change to the Land Transport (Road User) Amendment Rule today.

People who ignored the change would be liable for an $80 fine and 20 demerit points.

"There are a lot of other distractions while driving but hand-held mobile phone use has grown to become a significant problem," Mr Joyce said.

"The reality is we need to send a strong signal to all road users that it's not on. Texting and driving in particular is a total no brainer."
