I already have boost mobile, but it doesn't work when I leave the country. So I'm looking for a nextel walkie talkie phone.
boost is nextel/sprint so u can go to the boost website and see all the phones that r nextel that is compatible with boost.
The free HeyTell app claims to bring push-to-talk features to your iPhone or Android device for free. How well does it work? See our latest ...
If there isn't a product is there a website that discusses the possibility of converting a cellphone to a walkie talkie. I'm not talking about the NextTel walkie talkie feature. I'm talking off network peer to peer connection. I'm trying to figure out if there is anything I can do with my old cell phone.
A cell phone has two frequencies ,one to send and one to receive information. A talkie-walkie has one frequency to send and receive. To change you have to be assigned a frequency. You cannot use any of the frequencies assigned to the cell phone.

Sprint's Fair and Flexible Family Plans are a good choice. They have plans as low as $59 a month. PCS Ready Link is $10 a month for the first line and $5 for the second for unlimited walkie-talkie capability.

I am not talking about the technology that is used for Nextel push to talk but just plain old peer to peer walkie talkie. My phone has a camera and mp3 player and I could see a need to be able to communicate via walkie talkie to other cars during road trips or to my wife while in different parts of a store without using cell minutes.
Most of Nextel's rate plans include unlimited walkie-talkie minutes, so you really don't need to worry about using walkie-talkie minutes. And, most plans also include free mobile-to-mobile cellular calls (between any Sprint and/or Nextel phone) for an additional $5 for Nextel phones. For Sprint phones, mobile-to-mobile is free, but you don't have the walkie-talkie feature (except on hybrid ic502 phone, which uses Sprint cellular and Nextel walkie-talkie).
But, to answer your question - some of the newer Nextel phones have a feature called "Direct Talk". Direct Talk is just like a regular off-the-shelf walkie-talkie - it doesn't use minutes. But, you have to switch to Direct Talk mode to use it, and you cannot receive cellular or Nextel Nationwide Walkie-Talkie calls while you are in Direct Talk mode. However, your phone calls will go to voicemail.
Nextel's web site states that Direct Talk only works with the i315, i325 or i325 IS, but it is also available on the i560, i580, i355, i670, i760, i850, i870 and i880.
And, the effective range is usually 1-2 miles in town, and 5-6 out in the country - as long as you aren't in the mountains. Direct Talks works really well.
See the link for more information - here is the Nextel explanation about Direct Talk.
Direct Talk is an all-digital off-network walkie-talkie service that works between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles. Terrain, weather, foliage and man-made structures (such as buildings), among other things, may impact range availability. Direct Talk operates on the 900 MHz ISM public frequency and provides group and private walkie-talkie capability. This valuable service is ideal for use in remote locations, as a back up for emergency situations, or when network coverage may not be available.
Can I use a technology similar to 10-4 to dial my home phone and make phone calls from it? Such a technology should exist. I know I would not be able to roam that many miles, but I am never far with my cell phone anyway. The only reason such a technology wouldn't exist seems to me that phone companies would supress it because it would surely hurt the mobile phone industry!
Maybe you could jimmy-rig a setup by having a walkie-talkie and a voice activated phone right beside the walkie-talkie...
To build a system like you want yourself is clearly doable. It could be done with a PC with a programing language compiler, like C, installed touch tone encoders and decoders (like found on some old dial-up modems), an old phone (for its headset), a PC relay input / output card and several weeks of effort. Perhaps a better option is just to buy a long range cordless telephone. You might try the Voyager CL-2200XP AS Long Range Wireless Phone. It is claimed to have a 1 mile range indoors and 6 miles line of sight. It is legal in the USA and priced at about $600.
