Question regarding Walkie Talkie/ portable radio jacks, HOW EXCITING?

Hello, it would be a wonderful help if anyone could provide me with information relating too the jacks that are common on walkie talkies i think, its a 3.5mm audio plug and a 2.5mm one side by side, What do they each do? I have an old throat mic and was wanting to fiddle around with it, thanks very much
Kylenstevo,

Actually, the general two-way radio standard is that the 2.5mm is the microphone and the 3.5mm is for the speaker. Both are mono connections. For PTT (push-to-talk) you put 2.2kΩ from the 2.5mm TIP to ground (2.5mm ring). So, in order to use your throat mic, wire it up with a 2.5mm mono plug. For PTT, rig up a momentary SPST switch with one lead going to ground of the 2.5mm plug and the other switch lead going to the tip via a 2.2kΩ resistor. That'll key up the radio for you remotely. Some radios will let you use the PTT on the radio while having a mic plugged into the jack, some won't. It depends on the radio so best to wire a remote PTT when using the speaker/mic jack to be safe. Also, in Kenwood radios, the 2.5mm and 3.5mm jacks are reversed from the standard. Most that have a 2.5mm and 3.5mm jack are as I have already mentioned.

is there any small portable two way radio repeater(radio booster for walkie-talkie)?

as small as handheld or backpack with batteries.

I've got one that's about 2"x2"x6", including batteries, so, yes, it can be done. However, practically, for a repeater to do any good, it needs to be high above the average terrain, but that usually makes it relatively inaccessible, which not only impairs its portability, but also makes it hard to change its batteries.

One thing that shows up on auctions from time to time is the portable suitcase repeaters that the federal government used to use. They would be useful if one, say, rented a hotel room on the top floor of a tall hotel for the duration that radio communications were needed in the vicinity of the hotel. Re-using such a suitcase repeater would require reprogramming as well as appropriate FCC licensing (and possibly frequency coordination).

It might be useful to join a local amateur radio club, get a technician-class amateur radio license, and put together the repeater you are looking for yourself. You can go to www.arrl.org to look for a local club and/or local amateur radio license exams.

Is there a way to listen to portable phone conversations via a scanner?

I have heard that people can listen to your phone conversation when talking on your portable phone through a scanner and sometimes through a walkie talkie. Is this true? If so, what kind of scanner is required to do this? Is there a special chip someone must buy?

Old analogue cell phones and cordless phones could be picked-up on a scanner.

For the same reason you're worried/curious, people wanted better protection against eavesdropping.

Some scanners are gapped, meaning they do not receive cell phone frequencies. For those you need a special chip.

For the most part, new phones, cellular or cordless are becomming much more difficult to intercept. Innovations such as frequency-hopping, where your conversation is moved from channel to channel many times a second, or digital spread spectrum, where your voice is digitized into a stream of ones and zeros, and bits of your conversation is transmitted across a range of frequencies, all at the same time - has all made it more difficult to listen in on a phone conversation.

Ultimately, though, any wireless communication can be intercepted with enough know-how and equipment.

But rest assured, your average cellphone or cordless phone is sufficiently complex to keep most amateurs out of your calls.

If you're concerned, look for a cordless phone with features such as digital spread spectrum, a security code between the handset and the base, or voice scrambling.

How do I prevent losing portable devices at work ?

We use walkie talkies to communicate , on several occasions , I have had one clip on or to belt line or loop , and have lost it . Did not even hear it drop .

Should I start keeping the device all the way inside my pocket ?

Why don't you have it attached to your belt loop with a small chain or cord?

what kind of portable shortwave radio transmitters are there?

i would like to talk to my friends, but we live in an area without cellphone coverage. It is a very hilly, mountainous area and regular walkie talkies don't work.

the only license free band is the CB radio service on 27 MHz

There is a radio service called Amateur Radio or ham radio. Ham radio requires a license. The license requires testing.

You can find info on how to get a ham license at www.arrl.org
