or 40 miles. We only have Verizon Wireless where we live. and paying $70 a month just to talk to each other is stupid.
It's illegal. You have to have special license to own one. Only law enforcement and certain federal and government agencies, and legitmate corporations for legitimate authorized use are allowed to use such a wide range (Anything more than 5 miles I guess).

Well I just got some Walkie Talkies. The range is supposed to be 20 miles.. but we tested them out and it didn't even go 1 mile. Are we doing something wrong? Or is it 20 miles in an open field or something..
welcome to the great rippoff of the FRS radio system! 20 miles in a perect environment.
20 miles will require a repeater. to legally use a repeater you must either be a ham radio operator, or pay a GMRS repeater owner for using his repeater or pay for a radio system lease.
In what frequency would you be talking about ..This question I raised would only affect the "long range" part of your question. But lets just use an example for all ...Lets say the 2 meter band is your choice. In most cases the operation of a small handheld transceiver will fall into the double digit wattage area as a maximum and could fall below one watt as a minimum. In the US we use a series of inter-connected towers that receive the signal and boost it on to the next repeater tower until its final destination is reached . Its a lot like a telephone system. That way a HHT only has to key the first tower with minimal wattage.
To increase your HHT you would have to change the "final's" output wattage of the system. However when you do you'll see very quickly that your reserve (battery) is short lived . So you need to change the Ah (amp hour) rating on the battery system as well. Pretty soon this Long Range HHT weighs 5kilo and your arm hurts to carry it.
Sooooo----Instead of messing with the radio itself patch the output of the radio into an amplifier that is self contained and one that will boost your signal accordingly. THE place to find all this is in the AMATEUR RADIO HANDBOOK....google one up and buy it.. there are probably 10 responsible reasonable application within . Each one will be very similar to my explanation of the solution....Have a good one from the E
