Two Way Radios Answers
and if there is no way to boost why was it made like that. Is there any other device with that frequency but longer range? The only other devices I know are old cordless phones and R/C Toy cars. Finally if I had the knowledge to build my own Walkie Talkie, is there way for me to make the range at least 2 miles. This is for learning purposes I have FRS/Gmrs and CB Radios just bored and trying to learn stuff
Its a toy I hate the fact that the government wont let us just do what we want a license for this a license for that its annoying .......well its not like anyone listens anyways anywho I have an FRS/GMRS radio that goes 10 miles I just want to learn basics of a walkie talkie then go to the big stuff like ham radios just something simple first.
Why don't you start at ham radio first? There is no minimum age limit, and I feel sure the US (I am assuming you are American) would now have an entry level license class. We do here in Australia.
Gaining this license is merely a couple of days of basic electronic principles, practical work on connecting and using radios, electrical safety and the regulations governing radio usage.
The final testing is multiple choice answers, and a practical demonstration of setting up equipment. Easy stuff.
What it allows you to do is use limited power transmission equipment on many of the amateur bands, enough to allow of world- wide transmissions if you so desire. But the introduction should give you some idea as to why licensing is necessary, and that basic license can be upgraded as you gain more knowledge.
To answer your question, though, antennas are the simplest way to gain transmission distance. At 49 mhz, which is a VHF frequency, unfortunalely gain antennas are still rather large. Not practical for a hand held!
Apart from that, to add gain to a "toy" means increasing the effective equivalent power output, even if in one particular direction That's probably illegal also.
It's not likely your "toy" would contain very sophisticated transmitters OR receivers, due to cost, mainly.
You might measure the antenna lengths fitted, though. For 49 mhz a length of 1.45 metres (pretty long!), may improve the situation.
That's 1/4 wavelength at 49 mhz, less a tiny bit for "end effect".
Recordings of weird signals received with a modified toy walkie talkie. Lo-fi.
There is a little interference but I think it might be because I live in the city. Will this get better out in the country (and will the range improve too?) Otherwise, how do I get them to reach further?
You cant make it longer. Check if it has LOW and HIGH power option. Set it to HIGH.
If you go out in the country, less those buildings and power lines, range will be tripled.

I was wondering if there was a toys where it had 2 handsets that could send messages back and fourth but only to the eachother, I think i saw something like this at walmart but i can't find it...Does anyone have a link for it? thanks

im working on a project and what im trying to do is, control a R/C toy car through using a walkie talkie or cell phone, so i can get it to go farther than its made too. i try leaving the toy car in one spot with a cell phone and i took the TX with me and a cell phone and drove bout 6 blks aways and called the phone and had someone stand next to it while i press the buttons on the TX. it didnt work. i think maybe the phone wasnt close enough to the toy car...i dont know.
another way i though of is using a 567 tone decoder. i have a device that will sound phone dials( you know 1,2,3...) over a cell phone and the tone decoder would pick up the sounds over the radio and out put the desire action.( dial 1 is foward, dial 2 is back...ect) the only thing is that im having a problem with the mircophone picking a phone tone and outputting a steady signal. it jumps all over the place( 500hz, 657hz, 300 hz, no signal,325hz...ect)
thanks for any help. thanks
What you need to do is match the electro magnetic frequency of the receiver in the remote control car with the frequency of the transmitter in the cell phone.
Unfortunately cell phones don't let you modulate the frequency and neither do cell phones. Walkie talkies do, however, not near the range of most RC cars.
So, if you are serious about this project, which will be tricky, you'll need to create a transmitter and a receiver that match. For example, you could have one cell phone call another cell phone strapped to the r/c car. Great! Now you have a signal going from you to the car.
That's the easy part; the hard part is going to be converting the received signal into mechanical work. So, let's say you call the other cell phone on the car and send a text message 'forward', how are you going to get that text message to move the car?
You say you have a reciever that will actually move something when it hears a tone though? I've never heard of such a thing, but if you have one then you are set. Transmit tone on one phone receive it on the other. If not you'll need perhaps a phone with a USB port that you could export the signal, and then create a circuit board that decodes the USB signal and moves some actuators. I've also heard of this geting done with bluetooth as well. Possible, but I hope you have and electrical engineering degree.
A much easier way to accomplish what you want to do (extend the range of your wireless device) is to go to a hobby store that sells remote control planes. They sell transmitters and receivers and actuators that work over a much greater distance than most r/c cars. While you’re at it, build a gas powered r/c car or plane to make good use of your new range.
R/C cars are awesome! But not as awesome as you are if you can do this.
Walkie-talkies as toys
Not clear what you mean by "circuit".
If you mean a pair of walkie-talkies, then Maplins sell them. But so do places like Woolworths, and other toy shops.
If you mean the circuit boards, then Maplins probably sell them.
