Two Way Radios Answers
I have a company where my workers are spread out through out the city, the Midland two way radios have a range of 26 miles, or so the package says. I would like to know if these would be good for a 20 mile range to contact the workers?
The only way you can get this kind of range in a city is by using a repeater on a hilltop or tall building. The easiest way to do this is to go through a local 2-way radio shop that offers this kind of service. You pay a bit for the access but you don't have to try and license a frequency, install and maintain a facility at a hilltop, pay rent, etc. Another option, if you have company cell phones, is to get what they describe a p2t (push to talk) service on the cell phones. Your employees use the cell phones as walkie-talkies and just push a transmit button. Again you have to pay for this service but you will have to pay in one way or another no matter which way you go.

I am looking for a two way radio (I would prefer CB) that connects two automotive radios and a base over a range of 13 mile/20 kilometers wich is legal and under 120 bucks.
Using legal CB kit it would be unlikely you could get a reliable 20km range. A third of that would be more realistic for base-mobile communications. The only other option is to use more expensive PMR equipment.

In case phone & cells are down. To contact other family members.
you will not get 20 miles, point to point on any portable radio.
You need to use a repeater.
There are no license free services that use repeaters.
You can have all your family members study and take the Amateur Radio exam, and get a ham license
you can pay $85 for a 5 year GMRS license and pay the repeater owner for access
you can pay a repeater owner for a community repeater access.
The local Motorola Two-Way shop can tell you where to find the repeater owners.
If you want to get your ham radio license, contact the ARRL and ask for the local Special Service Clubs in your area. ARRL is the national organization for amateir radio - www.arrl.org

My husband and I are both intelligent adults who should easily be able to figure out how to work a simple two way radio. As boaters, we use single side band and marine vhf regularly. We purchased the motorola hands free voice activated unit to use when anchoring and docking. The voice activation does not work 90 percent of the time, even utilizing a head phone. The units get great reception for weather updates, however, we use our vessel’s vhf for that. For our purpose, the units were virtually useless. Buyer beware, you get what you pay for. So if you are on the Chesapeake Bay, Eastern Seaboard or in the Bahamas and notice two boaters shouting back and forth when anchoring...
