GMRS radio frequency to use in USA (two way radios)?

So I'm driving from Canada to the US with another group. As we will have two cars and would like to avoid roaming charges, I figured it would make more sense to use two GMRS radios to keep in contact while we drive.

The question is I am unaware of what the laws are regarding radio frequencies and which ones are save to use vs which ones must be avoided.

Does anyone know what channels/sub channels I can use south of the border as I travel in Albany and New Jersey?

You need a license with the FCC for GMRS.

You can use FRS and CB with no license. The frequencies are the same in The USA and Canada for that. Just use your best judgment for what channel to use.

which GMRS (two way radio) has the highest talk time?

i work in a press. it is loud and communication is crucial.

im looking the longest talk time and i also would like to know if it will work in a lot of noise in the background.

...and what are the construction workers using?

GMRS radios list their transmit range under ideal conditions. The fine print typically states the battery life under assumptions such as 5% talk time. Talk time is all about the batteries you're using.

For maximum battery life, use batteries with the longest milli-Ampere-hour (mA-h) rating and talk (transmit) as little as possible.

Are two way radios GMRS frequency capable out of the box without a license?

I am going to the bahamas in a few weeks where GMRS is legal, and I was wondering if the radios that claim 12 or 16 miles etc GMRS are capable of this right out of the box. Thanks!

Yes they are, The instructions for the radios contain warnings that you can be prosecuted for using these frequencies. Of course since I am one who plays 1st and reads directions later I was afraid that "big brother" would be coming after me.

Does a two way CB radio work with a pair of two way walkie talkies?

I'm on amazon and I need a communications unit for my farm and radios would be perfect. I'm looking at two products: Midland 1001Z 2-Way CB Radio, and Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4 50-Channel 36-Mile Waterproof 2-Way GMRS Radio. Can you communicate well between these two products. I was wondering because they both say two way.

GMRS and CB are different frequencies.

Why do most all TWO-Way Radios (GMRS/FRS) boat such a huge range, when in fact range is significantly less?

For example, I am very interested and will most likely purchase a new 2-way radio (GMRS/FRS), specifically the Cobra LI-7200/2WXVP GMRS 2-Way Radio Value Pack that boasts a 27 (that's TWENTY-SEVEN) mile range, when, in fact, from reading many, many reviews, the most that has been reported is maybe 2 miles?

Now, I understand that there are MANY factors involved, such as urban usage - buildings, houses, cars, trees, etc., but seriously, that is more than a 75% difference. Where are "they" coming up with those astronomical figures? Are the using the ocean, or airspace as their testing grounds?

You know, Walt Disney World covers about 47 square miles which is about the size of San Francisco or two Manhattan islands - so what good are these or any other two-way radios?

If you mention skiing in the mountains, don't bother cause I was using a 2-way radio while skiing in Colorado and took a wrong turn and ended up literally in the streets of town and I couldn't contact any of my party for assistance which led me to walking 2 miles in my rented ski-boots just to find a bus. Now, I am from Florida and let me tell you, we aren't used to ski boots when they are attached to skis, so don't think us boys down here like them any better now.
In my title, I meant to type "boast", not "boat".
A GMRS license? Yeah, right. Then why don't they include one (or information)when you purchase any GMRS 2-way radios that are for sale to the public? The ones I am referring to are the maximum power output allowed by law.

Click below for the 2-way radios I am referring to:

"marketing hype"? Seriously, it sounds to me like "false advertising", in which case, a lawsuit should be filed, eh?

Pure marketing hype. Manufacturers want to sell radios. They inflate their numbers drastically. You will not make more than 2 miles. I can't even make 27 miles with outdoor GMRS antennas.

License requirement information is in the manual of every radio. Yes, a license is required for the GMRS frequencies.
