Repeater Tower information , Air Time Two-way radio?

I have been tasked with a project I know little to nothing about...

I am a new appointed area watch commander for a Law Enforcement Agency that has recently expanded into a new area that we didn't use to service... It is several hours from the nearest TWO WAY communication setup that we already have...

Now I know little to nothing about TWO-WAY Radios and I did find several local radio shops (all closed this weekend) that may know about renting a tower...

I have heard some talk that leasing a tower, or sharing, is as cheap as 14-17 dollars a month...

We already have the radios (both 400, and 800 MHZ) and ready to use them...

Does anyone know some more insight on this???

Also is it usually only local companies that will have towers available or is it something I could find with MOTOROLA and they have them all over??

Just let me know..

I would suggest checking with the local ham clubs. I have the link here.

You may already be familiar with the people in your area through Emergency Management agencies.

My guess is that if there are towers available, some of the guys, particularly the ones working on their own Amateur radio repeaters, will know where to find them and who to call about getting an antenna up there. You may be able to reach some of them on a Sunday.

The public service part of our hobby is one of the reasons the FCC is giving us spectrum space, so helping the police is not much of a stretch for most hams.

Who says there are no Minutemen on the Canadian border?

"This morning, the 38-year-old Everett woman will don a yellow armband, load up a cell phone, a two-way radio and binoculars, and stand watch on the border with Canada, looking for anyone trying to sneak into this country.

"I will be there to bring attention to Americans that our borders are wide open and we need to secure them," said Forde, the media director and organizer of the Washington chapter of the Minuteman Project.

She won't be alone in looking. She said several hundred members from Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho will take part in the operation scheduled to run through October. The goal is to provide 24-hour surveillance at up to 15 outposts in Whatcom County and points east along the Washington-Canada border.

This operation marks the one-year anniversary of Minuteman activities in Whatcom County."

What do you think?

Bill W, I'm totally ok with that. There could be coffee handed across the border between Canadian and US Minutemen volunteers. Cooperation is a great thing.
chui, actually, as the article mentions, the members of the Minutemen have to go through a background check in part to assure that they are NOT connected with hate groups.
Jackie, they report all who cross. Then the border patrol can determine who is who.

I have some relatives living in Everett Wa. Lived & worked there for a while myself.
Now lets hear the criminal element supporters whine about how "discriminatory" & "racist" the Minutemen & Women are.
I am sending a clear message to illegal immigrants in my area of influence that they are not welcome while I am around. I have many enemies but thats the price of freedom.

Is it possible to learn a language in unconsciousness way like just listening the radio or TV?

for example I am trying to learn french just by listening the radio on the internet, or watching tv, I dont have channels in french in my cable network just two channels english.. but my point is it is possible to learn a language in a unconsciousness way

I'm going to say "no," although radio/TV are poweful tools to help you reinforce what you're learning.

If French isn't your mother language, there simply NO WAY you're going to understand the tense and mood of verbs, because they operate differently than in English. English uses modal verbs, the "would" in "I would like," for example. French doesn't use modal verbs like "would" or "could" in this sense, instead it inflects "would/could" onto the ending of the verb as in "Je voudrAIS" (I would like) as opposed to "je veux" (I want). There's no way you can glean than from merely listening to it spoken. Then there's the issue of idiomatic French.

Now, on the otherhand, if you have advance knowledge of something, for example watching a movie whose dialogue you know by heart in your mother tongue, and are able to watch it with French dubbed in, this can be a powerful learning tool. Even better yet, listening to French spoken dialgue, while simultaneously reading your mother tongue in subtitles.

But forget any "easy way." In fact, let me be real, to pull off learning a language, you have to dive deep. You can't do it with polite little lessons once or twice a week. You have to read, write, translate all the time.

Is this the way to determine whether or not you're a conservative?

You Might Be A Conservative, IF...
... you watch the Rush Limbaugh show the same way your kid watches “Barney and Friends.”

... you complain about the “liberal media” (CBS, NBC, ABC, New York Times, etc.) on any of the numerous conservative political radio talk shows.

... you have a bumper sticker that says “Insured by Smith and Wesson.”

... you believe the hole in the ozone layer to be a myth created by crazy liberals.

... you fervently speak about the evils of marijuana at social gatherings with a vodka straight in hand.

... you believe the Constitution states that Christianity is our official religion.

... you believe that elected officials should have no immunity to laws that you yourself must abide by.
(Somewhere, a Liberal just muttered "Wait a second...")

... you think the words feminist and lesbian are synonyms.

... you fit any of Jeff Foxworthy’s “You might be a redneck if...”

... you believe every man, woman, and child should be armed to the teeth with AK-47’s, hand grenades, handguns, and any other weapon imaginable. Wait, that should read "You might be a Liberal if you actually think that Conservatives believe..."

... you believe in the importance of individual responsibility, and do not wish for the government to tell you how to live.

... you have faith in economic policies such as “trickle down economics.”

... you think that Michaelangelo’s David should be wearing boxers at the least.

... the hostess at the Sizzler knows you by name.

... you have a button that says “I’m not prejudiced, I hate everyone.”

... you can ask your daddy to bail you out when you lose hundreds of thousands of dollars from embezzling S&L’s.

... your get your opinions from an egocentric man named Rush who distorts facts consistently to fit his views.

... you obsessively impose your own morality upon others. Hmmm.. A common denominator...

... you ever wanted to amend the Constitution to make desecration of the flag illegal.

... you believe that if parents and teachers don’t mention sex to a child until s/he is 16, then s/he won’t even know it exists until then.

... you think it might be a good idea to don rubber gloves before shaking hands with a homosexual.

... you believe so strongly in the importance of equality that you are against giving groups of people special benefits based on their race or religion.

... you helped to ban Beavis from saying “fire,” yet keep a loaded handgun in the house.

... you’ve ever called a secretary or waitress “Toots.”

... you answer to “The Man.”

... you use any of these terms to describe your wife: old ball and chain, little woman, old lady, tax credit...

How do I get started to set up a 500 watt a day or so PV solar system?

I want to start looking into using solar panels at my home. For a small scale test to get started and learn more about it I wanted to set up a system of about 500 watts a day to run a lamp or two and maybe a radio or a cell phone charger. What would be the best way to go about this and what do i need to watch out for when selecting equipment?

First thing:  you need to correct your units.  A watt is a rate, like a mile per hour.  What you want is watt-HOURS, which a quantity like distance (miles).  You can get 500 watts out of something the size of a flashlight battery, but you'll only get it for minutes at the most.

Getting units right is important; if you use units wrong, you can get answers that are completely misleading and waste a lot of money on something that won't work.

If you want 500 watt-hours per day (say, 100 watts of loads running for 5 hours/day) you'll need at least 100 watts of PV panel (after correcting for the losses due to the angle of sunlight!).  The average sun on a sunny day is equal to about 6 hours of the sunlight at noon, so 100 watts of panel will give you up to 600 watt-hours of juice per day, or maybe 500 Wh after losses.

It's unlikely that your sun situation is going to be that good all the time (unless you live someplace like Phoenix!) so you'll need more PV.  If you have 150 watts, you can go on 4 hours of noontime sun; 200 watts lets you get away with 3 hours.

Next is batteries.  You don't want to discharge your batteries more than about 50%, so to coast for 1 day of no sun you need 1 kWh (83 amp-hours @ 12 volts) of battery.  Coasting for 2 days would be a good thing, so maybe 170 amp-hours of 12-volt deep-discharge battery would serve.  You can get suitable batteries for a starter system in lots of places.

The next thing is the charge controller and inverter (if any).  If you use 12-volt lamps, radio etc. you can dispense with the inverter and its losses.  You can also take all your gear camping with you!  The charge controller will help manage the batteries and prevent damage from overcharging.  Having an undervoltage cutoff or alarm would be good to prevent over-discharging.

I'm looking to set up a system soon.  My goal is to run emergency lights and a backup sump pump.
