Two Way Radios Answers

What are the restrictions on two-way radios in Egypt?

I am looking to purchase some two-way radios (perhaps the Motorola 5500) to use in survey work when our team will be spread out in the desert. Does anyone know what kind of two-way radios are allowed to be used? Are there restrictions on particular frequencies or signal strengths?

Thanks!
In case this wasn't clear in my initial question: I am talking about government restrictions/laws, not availability of electronics in Egypt. The radios will be purchased before entering Egypt, so we must know about any legal restrictions ahead of time.

There are of course restrictions. Egypt has always had tough laws that aim at protecting its institutions such as police, army etc.

Two way radios are not banned, but need special permissions from the local authorities, in this case not the police, but the intelligence services. You need a valid reason to apply for a two radio license, not just for tourism business. Petroelum companies for example are allowed to use them and they do apply for a special permit.

Remember, two way radios can detect and listen on police and army frequencies, this is serious business in egypt and u need to be careful.

The best way of handling this is to contact a law firm and ask them to get the necessary permits for you. Getting intouch with the intelligence services is not an easy task and you need a local expert to handle them and surely a valid reason for your application and dont expect to get the permit the next day, such matters are usually time consuming.

What is the purpose of the mon feature on two-way radios, and walkie-talkies what does it do and what does it stand for?

saturn is incorrect, but close. most radios have automatic squelch, that is, you dont hear the static in the background when no (or a weak signal) is being recieved. when a strong enough signal is sent, the squelch opens and you hear the transmission.

there are cases where you want to over ride the squelch:
-if the signal you are listening for is very weak
-you want to check to make sure the frequency is not in use

this is where you would use the monitor function

Midland Two Way Radios good for 20 mile range?

I have a company where my workers are spread out through out the city, the Midland two way radios have a range of 26 miles, or so the package says. I would like to know if these would be good for a 20 mile range to contact the workers?

The only way you can get this kind of range in a city is by using a repeater on a hilltop or tall building. The easiest way to do this is to go through a local 2-way radio shop that offers this kind of service. You pay a bit for the access but you don't have to try and license a frequency, install and maintain a facility at a hilltop, pay rent, etc. Another option, if you have company cell phones, is to get what they describe a p2t (push to talk) service on the cell phones. Your employees use the cell phones as walkie-talkies and just push a transmit button. Again you have to pay for this service but you will have to pay in one way or another no matter which way you go.

Can I program my motorola gp340 two way radios to work license free on the cb network?

I have a few GP340 UHF Motorola Two-Way radios, which need to be licensed before I can legally use them. I have not yet tried the programming software, but...

Can I set the frequency channels to the PMR channels in the range of: 446.103125 MHz to 446.196875 MHz (UHF)
The power output to: 4W

and legally use the radios without license in the UK?

or not even lower the power? Please advise.

Thanks.

In the UK, you are not allowed to operate any radio on the PMR frequencies over 500 milliwatts. As the minimum power on these radios is 1 watt, you are not supposed to use the PMR frequencies. However, the programming software does allow you to do so.

Nick
