I have a Walkabout T6510 Motorola walkie talkie (10 miles) and my friend has a GMR635-2CK Uniden Walkie talkie (6 miles). We live 8 miles away driving, and 3 miles away as the crow flies, and we are both on Channel 16. We are trying to talk to each other, but it won't work. What to do?
I think we are in range, because we live 3 miles apart, and we have 10 mile range, and 8 mile range. It should be working......
Do we have to put in 'sub' channels? Like 16, 30 or something? Out walkie talkies have the main number, and then smaller numbers after.
The batteries are fully charged.
Just because you use the same channel number does not mean you are on the same frequency, and frequency is what matters. Get the radios close together(about 100 ft. apart) leave 1 radio on channell 1 and call it from each channell on the other one. If there is no match switch the first radio to channell 2 and try again etc. You may find several frequencys that match, or none.

Hi,
Friends and i have different brands of walkie talkie - I have an Oricom and they all have Unidens - for some reason mine doesn't talk to theirs - is it because of the brand? We made sure we are on the same channel and are standing at least 5m apart like the book said.
Your problem is quite an ugly one. There are two open radio bands for walkie talkies (excluding CB - Citizen's Band). There is FMRS and GMRS. Most walkie-talkie's use the FMRS, whereas technically to use the GMRS you need to have a permit from the FCC. However, walkie-talkie manufacturers design radio's that are only FMRS, only GMRS, or both.
So the 1st problem to figure out is which band of frequencies are the radios operating on. The user manuals will state such.
Odds are likely the radios are all using the FMRS band. However, there are digital subchannels of the 14 Frequencies. I know it's starting to sound confusing, but keep trying. The 14 frequencies are open to all to use, so in order to establish privacy, radio manufacturers create digital subchannels. This is likely where your problem exists. You are on the same channel as your friends, but their radios are on a different subchannel. Once again, the user manual should clarify how to tell which subchannel you, or your friends radios are on.
I'm not familiar with Oricom, but Uniden definitely fits the information above. Oricom may not have subchannels, so your friends may need to switch to subchannel 0 in order to communicate with you.
This is assumming you are talking about the generic walkie talkies sold in sporting goods stores, wal-marts, etc....
There are also much more expensive radios that operate on the VHF Frequencies rather than the UHF Frequencies. The FMRS Band is in the UHF Spectrum, so if your radio is a VHF Radio, it will not work with the other radios. Unidens small personal handheld radios are all operating in the UHF Spectrum.
Good Luck!
