What is the best frequency type and mile range for a 8 miles radius communication?

I am looking for the best tips to allow me choose the best walkie talkie.

Does the later walkie talkie are equip with better signal?

Honestly, none of those radios will get you 8 miles. They may be advertised to do so, but they won't work.

Also a license is required for the GMRS channels.

Well I just got some Walkie Talkies. The range is supposed to be 20 miles.. but we tested them out and it didn't even go 1 mile. Are we doing something wrong? Or is it 20 miles in an open field or something..

20 miles will require a repeater. to legally use a repeater you must either be a ham radio operator, or pay a GMRS repeater owner for using his repeater or pay for a radio system lease.

i'm looking for a walkie talkie that has about a 20 mile range so that me and my mate can contact each other. i'm looking to spend about £50 and i would ideally need two charges, one for each of us

Hello,

To be able to talk communicate in 20mile distance you need a base station unit (10 to 25 watt) attached to high mounted (8-10 meters above the ground) collinear base antenna. The other end can be mobile/car unit (10-25 watt), with antenna on the roof. Even then, it will not guarantee 100% connectivity, as you can loose contact with the other end if any bigger hill or high buildings will appear on your way, as radio waves always travel through straight lines (they can reflect or diffract on bigger objects, but the signal gets weaker then). You can not communicate 20 miles with 2 handheld radios, for sure.

To use any PBR (Private Business Radio) you have to apply for a license to an Ofcom – Radio Communication Agency, they will give you 2 frequencies and a CTCSS + DCS tone so you can use it legally. The cheapest license option cost £75/year. You can not get that radio equipment for less than £50, even second user condition.

You can go for CB radios, again similar equipment types are required (Base station + Mobile unit with antennas). I do not have information about license for CB, but I’m sure you have to get one, before starting using these radios. CB radios may be cheaper than PBR, but £50 it is still not much, I’m afraid.

You can explore eBay and see what is available. People very often sell all lots of radios, which you may find useful for yourself. Price depends of the working order and demand for the radios. You can get second hand mobile/car unit for about £30-50 (Maxon PM100, Motorola P110, GM300, CM140).

Look careful for description, as you need CONVENTIONAL type of the radio (Direct communication between the units), not TRUNKING. Also you need both units to be on the same banding (VHF or UHF), so they can be programmed to work together.

The License Free radios (PMR446) are available anywhere (online shops, superstores, electronic shops, etc). They do not require any license to use them, but they are very low power units (Limited to 0.5watt) and only available as hand-held radios. They can talk together around 0.5-2 miles (depending of environment – buildings, hills, trees).

I was wondering if anyone knew of some sort of Walkie-Talkie's which were simple, but allowed individuals to communicate up to 50 miles away (2-way)... least range being 20 miles. Where could I find something like this? Thank you!

You would have to go through a repeater. Handheld radios do not have sufficient power to cover that distance without something in the middle to relay the signal. Since repeaters require extensive technical knowledge, licensing and money to install and maintain, you may be better off doing one of two things.

1. Check with a local 2 way radio shop. Many of them operate private radio networks that you can subscribe to. This option is usually rather pricey.

2. Get a 2 way walkie talkie compatible phone, such as a Nextel.

I'm trying to get some walkie talkies for work.

They can be very simple, but they need to have at least 20 miles range, multiple handsets and have a base station.

For example, I need to be able to call employees from my office when they're on site.

I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have suggestions?

The type of radio, I mean VHF or UHF really depends on the 20miles of terrain you are trying to cover. This may be a good guide.

Terrain. Mainly flat/clear radios that have a freq between 138-470 mhz
Terrain. Mainly Buildings radios that have a freq between 400-470 mhz
Terrain. Forest radios that have a freq between 68-88 mhz
Terrain. Hills radios that have a freq between 68-170 mhz
Terrain. Large Hills radios that have a freq between 26-68 mhz

Unless it is clear terrain I doubt you will be able to guarantee 20 miles from the handheld.
Get the base antenna up as high as possible. remember the lower the frequency the longer the antenna on the handheld.
