Walkie Talkie 5 Mile

My friends bought me a set of 5 mile walkie talkies for my b-day yesterday and we tested it out at some mall while doin so we heard alot of other people talking over the same frequency were at my question is is it possible that they can also hear us when we talk? Thanks

I'm pretty sure they can. If you don't know them, don't say anything embarrassing, or give out personal/specific information about yourselves then it really shouldn't be a problem.

There are some walkie-talkies you have has their own special encoding/signature/signal that lets other walkie-talkies that are on the same frequency AND of the same brand hone in on just that those bursts of signals. You can set them up so that they will only play back those specialized signals and cut out all of the other chatter but you're transmission will be able to picked up by everyone else and all of the other signals you'd normally pick up will be muted. But hey, if you can't hear them then why care?

There also may be some walkie-talkies that actually encrypt their signals but I'm pretty sure that's out of the price range and usage for an average consumer. I'm actually not even sure if the FCC allows walkie-talkie bands to be encrypted.

I got 10-mile walkie talkies and they were working fine to start out - around the block, testing a little further, etc. Perfect. But as soon as I started to drive away from the other person, the connection got staticy and then dropped altogether - and I was not a mile down the road!

Our houses are 5, maybe 6 miles apart and we get nothing. Could it be the fact that bad weather was coming in? Or the fact that they're cheap? Or the fact that there are many housing communities and trees around here in our area? I realize it could be any combination of those factors and others, but I was just hoping for some insight or tips for these to work for us from one house to the other.

They are the Uniden GMR1038-2, running on 4 AAA batteries. 22 channels, up to 99 subcodes, 10 mile range.

Those range claims are totally false! The links below will give you plenty of good info on GMRS.

Those radios will get you maybe a mile at best. Manufacturers grossly inflate these range claims to sell more products.

Also, make sure if you use the GMRS frequencies, you have a GMRS license. Regulations require this.

A few friends and I go dirtbike riding every weekend and we quite often get split up and have to waste riding time with trying to find each other. I was just wonder if that have walkie talkies out that aren't to expensive but that has a headset and maybe even hands free so we don't have to stop to communicate. The hands free don't have to be a priority just headset. All we would need would be 5 - 10 miles.

I don't think I need more than 5 miles range top. Ideally this would be more afforadble of a solution.
Generally speaking I just yell, but in senario paintball (which is a lot of fun) There is a huge expanse of field in use and if you go with the intent of playing with friends it can be VERY hard to meet up after someone gets out and has to go back to the start again. I really want this primarily for senario paintball.

Definitely go with the GMRS/FRS two-way radios. You can find one's with at least 5 mile range for about $25 for a pair. Since you dont' want to take your hands off you marker, you can get some VOX enabled (voice activated) headsets. The headsets run about $10-30 each.

like if the box says it could go 5 miles but it really doesnt. but when you get the fcc license it really gos to 5 miles?
and does it really cost 85 to get the license?

GMRS requires an $85 license as the manual to your radios will explain. The extra power allowed under GMRS regulations will only help if you use commercial-grade equipment. 5 Miles with any handheld is a stretch, if possible at all unless you use a repeater, wheich no consumer-grade equipment is capable of.
