i bought a walkie talkie from USA and i live in UK, would they work?

They may or may not. Radio walkie talkies, all need a certain radio wave length to work. If that band happens to set aside, in the same manner, as in the U.S.A. then you should have no problem.
You may have trouble recharging those, as our two countries have different Electric Grid, The UK, uses 220 Volts, while the US uses 110 Volts. but you may be able to buy an adaptor, to convert the power to the lower level.

they are on 446 MHz. While 446 MHz is a free for all band in the UK, it is in the middle of the Amateur Radio band in the USA and Canada. 446.000 happens to be a very popular simplex channel.

You can buy "FRS" band radios here, every Walmart, KMart, Radio sHack store sells inexpensive radios - Walmart = $29.00 a pair some more, some less. Thats what, about 14 Pounds.

I am traveling with some family members to cancun,mexico. We want to be able to stay in touch without using our cells. Does any one know if this will work or any better ideas?

Walkie talkies will work OK if you're all in one hotel or shopping mall and not too many rooms or stores apart. Anything more than that and they won't work. We rented cell phones from Mexitel Cellular that only cost 50 cents per call and they worked really well to call each other - and to call the US for $1 per call.

If you a infantryman everyone will get a chance to use the radio downrange in OIF or OEF. Or just training on base-
Training to use the radio, that's a necessity that every soldier is trained on, some more than others.
Walkie talkies are for the e/5 and above
Theres always a radioman when your on the ground fighting or patrolling. Also in every humvee, mrap, bradley etc

If your provider is NEXTEL it will work from TELUS in Canada.
